One of the most bizarre stories this week is a report that’s eerily reminiscent of the Davis v. Davis case of years ago, where a judge in a Virginia divorce case ruled that human embryos are property, or as he put it “goods and chattels.” The law that Fairfax County judge Richard Gardiner cited to uphold the determination was a 19th century slavery law. His action proves the point that in far too many cases the preborn are considered less than human and are therefore disposable.
In Texas where there is a heartbeat law in place, five women have sued claiming that it is now dangerous to be pregnant in Texas! The statement was made by the president of the Center for Reproductive Rights—a group committed to abortion on demand. The Texas law bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected. However, the law permits the abortion to proceed anyway if a physician believes a medical emergency exists. Interestingly, the words “medical emergency” are not defined.
So in Texas, with the right doctor making the decision for her patient, the killing will proceed. Yet the law is called a “ban.” This sort of rhetorical gamesmanship is all too familiar and very deadly for those who cannot speak on their own behalf—the babies.
And across the sea in Australia, animal rights fanatic Peter Singer, professor of bioethics, has written an article entitled “Will the Catholic Church Rethink Contraception?”
In their quest to dismantle Catholic teaching, not to mention assail the Church herself, the foes of truth are constantly challenging sacred truth. There is no debate on that point, but when someone as infamous as Singer starts making outrageous statements, we take note.
First, we turn to the experts who agree with the view that Humanae Vitae is an undeniable teaching based on the consistent dogma of Catholic tradition and faith. On this question, Catholic Answers opines:
No doubt previous centuries of popes and bishops would be flabbergasted by the theories that modern dissenters concoct to sidestep the teaching of Humanae Vitae. They knew that the Church provides no quasi-magisterial veto power to bishops, theologians or the faithful, either in one age or across generations. They knew that magisterial teaching can be infallible and binding without an extraordinary definition. And they knew that when a pope definitively reaffirms Sacred Tradition, as Paul VI did in Humanae Vitae, we can be sure we are in possession of divinely given truth that sets us free, now and forever (John 8:31-32).
Clearly the truth has never stopped the enemies of Christ and His bride, the Church. And so the social insanity trail continues. When it comes to Catholic teaching, whether the fact is that a human being begins at the union of sperm and egg or that according to God’s law there is no such thing as a legal abortion or that infallibility is a reality, the knives are always out.
In times like these, we turn to the Lord and His word to show the way. For while the trail to social insanity is flowing with the blood of the innocent and the evil one’s deceit, the Lord reminds us in Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely.”
