Pro-Life This Week: May 5, 2023

New to the ALL resources store is the Spiritual Adoption of a Conflicted Mother prayer card.

In the spirit of Archbishop Sheen’s beloved prayer for children in danger of being aborted, we introduce this prayer for mothers who are being offered abortion as a “solution” to their unexpected pregnancy.

Prayer is a powerful way to clear a mother’s heart and mind of the lies and distortions put forth by abortion proponents.

As we approach Mother’s Day this Sunday, consider adding this new prayer card to your daily prayers.

Find the prayer card here.

Week in Review – Sorry, Trump Is Not Pro-Life (But Maybe We Can Change His Mind)

This week, Donald Trump was a guest on a CNN Town Hall event, delving into political topics leading up to the 2024 presidential election.

One of the questions asked was in regard to Donald Trump’s stance on abortion, specifically, his support for a national abortion ban. Trump answered the way you would expect a politician to answer—trying to please as many people as he could, all the while missing the whole point of being truly pro-life.

Moderator Kaitlan Collins asked Trump, were he back in the oval office, if he would he sign a federal abortion ban into law.

“I would negotiate so that people are happy,” stated Trump.

For the next few minutes, Trump repeated his intentions to negotiate, driving home the fact that to him, to the GOP, and to GOP donors, abortion is merely a political issue, a topic the GOP will use as a negotiating factor.

“I want to do what’s right . . . we want to do what’s right for everybody,” Trump stated. “For the first time, people that are prolife have negotiating capability.”

For those of us who have worked in the pro-life movement over several decades, we know exactly what “negotiating capability” means. It means allowing for abortion WITH exception and WITH compromise. But why would a pro-life president, who some say is the most pro-life in our nation’s history, advocate for abortion exceptions and abortion compromise? I can think of two reasons.

The first of these reasons is the polling numbers. Remember, Trump wants to make most people happy. The latest Gallup poll on abortion shows that 50% of Americans want legal abortion in some cases, also known as exception and compromise. It makes sense from a political standpoint that Trump would put his stock where 50% of the popular vote lies, thus signing into law a ban that still allows for exception and compromise.

The reality of this is a stark one. Human dignity and preborn lives don’t really matter to Trump or to the GOP; all they care about is the vote. Perhaps if the preborn could vote, this reality would be different, but it’s not.

The second reason is one that provides a bit of hope, but also requires work on our part. It is entirely possible that Trump does not understand why abortion exceptions and compromise are wrong, and he wouldn’t be alone. The same Gallup poll referred to above says a dismal 13% of voters want illegal abortion in all cases, meaning Trump fits in with the other 87%.

This is largely a failure on our part and the rest of the pro-life movement.

Abortion is not a political issue; it’s a matter of conversion.

Instilling in Americans a desire to protect human life at all costs will not change with a partial abortion ban or even with a total abortion ban. They will help incrementally, but they will not solve the issue.

The issue we are faced with is degradation of human life. This cannot be solved politically, no matter how hard we try.

What Trump and the 87% are missing is that it is not our responsibility to decide what stage of gestation justifies an abortion. It’s not our responsibility to deem a child conceived in wedlock more worthy of life than one conceived in violence. It’s not our responsibility to condemn to death a child with fetal abnormalities.

Humanity has forgotten our place; we are not the author of life. Only God is.

Our job is to love our fellow man and stand for the total protection of humanity. Sometimes this is not easy. It’s not easy to tell a mother who has conceived a child in rape that she should carry that child to term. It’s not easy to tell a new mom that her preborn child most likely will not survive after birth.

But protecting the preborn is what we would call a hard truth.

Loving our fellow man means making choices that may not be easy for us but result in the best for the other. This is real love, this is self-sacrificing love, this is love as displayed for us on the Cross.

Being truly pro-life does not mean you rejoice over a greater ability to negotiate on the House floor or in the Senate.

To be truly pro-life is to love selflessly—just as God has called us to do.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen says in “The World’s First Love”: “Man cooperates with nature; woman cooperates with God. Man was called to till the earth, to ‘rule over the earth’; woman to be the bearer of a life that comes from God.” This May, American Life League is celebrating the dignity and uniqueness of women—especially mothers.
