‘The Pill Kills Women’: Nationwide Protests to Expose Obama’s Healthcare Plan

Washington, D.C. (27 May 2009) – President Barack Obama’s proposed health-care plan will endanger women’s health.

That’s the message women and men around the country will proclaim when they gather June 6 outside of hospitals, pharmacies, health-care and Planned Parenthood facilities for the largest protest ever against the birth control pill and other hormonal contraceptives.

“Women are getting cheated when it comes to health care,” said Marie Hahnenberg, project director for American Life League’s “The Pill Kills Women” event. “How many women have to die before we stop throwing our tax dollars at a drug that hurts and sometimes even kills women?”

As our nation struggles to emerge from a crippling recession, the Obama stimulus package and health-care plan include millions upon millions more taxpayer dollars on top of Title X’s existing $300-million program for free or discounted birth control.

This despite studies that show the birth control pill and other hormonal contraceptives can lead to cardiovascular problems that can result in death. They can also cause cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, depression and much more.

“It is time for our country to expose these deadly side effects of the pill and help women, rather than prescribe something that does more harm than good,” Hahnenberg said.

On Thursday, June 4, Dr. Lynn Kerr, an associate clinical professor from the University of California at San Francisco will be speaking at “The Pill Kills Women” press conference, to be held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. at 10 a.m. Dr. Kerr is also board-certified in internal medicine.

Other speakers include Dr. Paul Carpentier, certified by the American Academy of FertilityCare Professionals, and Jennifer Giroux, a registered nurse as well as founder and president of Women Influencing the Nation.

Cosponsors of Protest the Pill Day include Pharmacists for Life International, Pro-Life Wisconsin, Women Influencing the Nation, Human Life International, One More Soul, Pro-Life Unity and the Archdiocese of Mobile, Alabama’s Respect Life Office.
