Resignation of top FDA official over Plan B

Jim Sedlak, vice-president of American Life League, issued the following statement regarding the recent resignation of a high-ranking FDA official over the controversy surrounding the emergency contraceptive, Plan B:

News of the resignation of Susan Woods, director of the FDA's Office of Women's Health, in the wake of the administration's non-decision regarding the over-the-counter status of Plan B once again shows the controversial nature of this drug. Woods' claim that scientific evidence had been "overruled" exemplifies the political hypocrisy surrounding this debate.

American Life League has consistently contended that Plan B should never have been approved by the FDA in the first place. There is a substantial lack of scientific information about this drug and the health effects it has on young women, in particular. What we do know is that Plan B functions just as the birth control pill does, and science and time have shown that the birth control pill not only offers a host of medical problems for women, but it can also kill preborn children in the womb. Plan B is no different.

Woods' insinuation that politics has trumped science describes precisely what has happened for years when the FDA has been faced with decisions regarding dangerous drugs that affect human reproduction. Anti-life politics have taken over. The FDA has consistently lied over the past 40 years, denying that a human being can die when the birth control pill is ingested. A new human being with his own unique DNA exists at fertilization. When a woman takes any form of the birth control pill, she may be putting a newly-formed baby at risk of death. Manufacturers admit that one of the pill's effects prohibits the human embryo from implanting in the uterine wall. Despite the FDA's deceptive rhetoric and pro-abortion political agenda, science tells the truth. The birth control pill, and Plan B, can kill a preborn human being.

American Life League once again calls on the FDA to protect American women and children by removing Plan B from the market immediately. ALL urges concerned citizens to contact FDA Commissioner Lester M. Crawford, urging him to reject the request for over-the-counter status for Plan B and to pull this drug from the market immediately.
