Catholic Bishops to Congress: If Not Now, When?

President of oldest Catholic pro-life group praises USCCB call for cutting funds to nation’s #1 abortion provider

(WASHINGTON, DC) — The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a press release today that the USCCB has formally called on Congress to stop funding Planned Parenthood.  The release said that Cardinal DiNardo wrote that during such a budget crisis, “Whether to fund the largest abortion network in the country is not one of those hard choices.”

Judie Brown, president of American Life League, the oldest and largest Catholic pro-life group in America, issued this statement:

“Catholics can be proud that the leadership of Catholics in America is unequivocally defending both Church teaching and innocent lives.  Cardinal DiNardo is 100 percent correct that the effort to divert the discussion away from abortion, and try to make the debate about women’s access to basic health care, is false.

As Cardinal DiNardo’s letter points out, defunding Planned Parenthood does not divert one cent from health care services for women.  In fact, these same tax dollars can now go to providers that can actually expand access to additional women’s services such as mammograms and legitimate maternity care that Planned Parenthood does not offer.

We commend the USCCB on taking a strong, clear stand in representing the Catholic Church and the most innocent who cannot speak for themselves in this crucial matter.”
