Archbishop Wilton Gregory’s Disappointing Statement

Washington, D.C. (11 November 2008) – As the U.S. bishops begin their annual Fall Assembly in Baltimore, Judie Brown made the following statement regarding Archbishop Wilton Gregory's recent comments on the election of Sen. Barack Obama.

American Life League plans to hold a vigil and press conference outside the Assembly on Nov. 11. For more information, please see below.

"It is heartbreaking to read the recent comments of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, of the Atlanta archdiocese. According to a widely circulated news report, the archbishop described Barack Obama's election as president of the United States as 'a great step forward for humanity …'

"Although the archbishop was undoubtedly thinking in terms of racial discrimination in the United States, the election of Obama cannot be simply reduced to that of race. The horrifying fact is that in electing Obama, the American people have elected the cultural leader of the pro-abortion political machine. Obama is so dedicated to abortion that he is eager to sign the dreadful Freedom of Choice Act.

"As was demonstrated many times across the nation by African-American clergy of all faiths, it is a sad fact that although less than 14 percent of Americans are black, more than 33 percent of African-American preborn children are murdered by abortion. Thus, when the Obama victory is taken in its entirety, many in the African-American community are devastated by the results of this election.

"It matters not what color Obama's skin is; it does matter that he detests preborn children to the extreme degree that he does. We ask for prayers for all our bishops that they will have the wisdom, courage and fortitude to speak out against the tragedy of abortion that is likely to become the horrible legacy of President-elect Obama, and to protect the Eucharist from all pro-abortion politicians."
