Pro-Life Leader Calls on Obama to be Consistent When Speaking About Religious Freedom

Washington, D.C. (26 August 2010) – In light of President Obama’s firm support for the religious freedom of Muslim Americans to build a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City, American Life League president Judie Brown is calling on Obama to similarly support the religious freedom of Catholics, particularly with regard to fundamental moral questions such as the right to life for all preborn children.

“It appears the White House has a skewed view of religious freedom when the subject is Catholic principle,” Brown said, citing examples in South Carolina and Wisconsin in which Catholic institutions are being forced to pay for employee health plans that cover abortion and contraception. This mandate directly violates the teachings of Catholicism – a faith professed by 24 percent of Americans.

“Religious freedom is an American principle that is being pulverized by the same political and media machine that has, for more than 30 years, protected the so-called ‘freedom of choice,’” Brown continued. “With so many examples of religious intolerance toward Catholics in particular now occurring nationwide, the president’s gusto in protecting the rights of Muslims is one of the most hypocritical acts thus far of an administration already riddled with hypocrisy.”

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to death.  For more information or press inquiries, please contact Katie Walker at 540.659.4942.
