LATE TERM IN PARIS: According to Family Planning Perspectives, “more than half of women obtaining third-trimester abortions in a Paris hospital between 1986 and 1994 would not have sought a termination earlier in their pregnancy, because the fetal impairment that motivated their decision would not have been detectable or its prognosis could not have been firmly established.” Some 305 women were involved.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES: The most common STDs among 15-19 year-olds are chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, human papillomavirus and hepatitis B. The results can be devastating and include risk of infertility and/or sterility. Researcher Peter Leone estimates that there could be another 30 percent increase in herpes between now and 2004. Proponents of sex education as the “cure” claim that the reason such diseases continue to attack young people is “that people are still reluctant to talk openly about them.” And who do they recommend as experts? Planned Parenthood’s Teenwire web site, among others.

“EVRA” WEEKLY PATCH: Johnson and Johnson plans to seek approval from the Food and Drug Administration for a new “contraceptive” patch. Commenting on EVRA, John Wilks, author of A Consumer’s Guide to the Pill and Other Drugs told communique, “This method of drug administration is known as transdermal medication. As a technique it is used increasingly as the preferred method of drug delivery. Ease of use (once per week), and no gastrointestinal side-effects make it appealing to patients. It is used for treating angina, nicotine addiction, HRT etc.

“The single biggest disadvantage is that under humid conditions, the patches dislodge due to skin sweat. Frequently the wearer is not aware that a patch has fallen off until she takes a shower or changes clothing. Herein lies a major problem: if the pill patch falls off and goes unnoticed for, say 5-6 hours, or longer at night, the woman will have no ‘contraceptive’ hormone operative within her body. This could lead to breakthrough ovulation, and conception. If the patch is reapplied after breakthrough ovulation has occurred followed by conception, she may implant and the embryo is unwittingly exposed to a couple of weeks of supraphysiological oestrogen. Are birth defects a possibility? Theoretically yes. Time will be the answer.”

PLAN B MORNING AFTER PILL: Plan B was developed by and is being marketed by the Women’s Capital Corporation of Seattle, Washington, a privately held company. Its “emergency contraceptive” consists of two tablets of levonorgestrel, one of which must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, and the second 12 hours later. Susan Cruzan of the FDA said that “Plan B is as effective as the product on the market but has less-severe side effects.”

UNBORN VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE ACT: A recent headline reads: “House to Consider Bill on Harming Fetus.” The story that follows reports: “the House Judiciary Committee will consider a bill making it a crime to harm a fetus-except in the case of intentional abortion-after the August recess, GOP staff said. The Constitution subcommittee passed the bill 5-2. It makes criminals liable for the harm to fetuses just the same as they would be for harm to the mother. Voluntary abortions are not outlawed. It also exempts women who accidentally or intentionally harm their own fetuses.”

DRUG ADDICTS GET PAID TO BE STERILE: In California, a controversial program is offering $200 to any woman who is a known drug addict and can show that she has either been sterilized or is on a long-term method of birth control such as Norplant. A woman who wants to stem the birth of children to women who are addicted to drugs began the program. So far 57 women have been paid for getting permanent birth control through the C.R.A.C.K. program.

COMMENT: The chemical’s action in causing the death of an embryonic child is not considered serious?

LANGUAGE: Anthony Palumbo of the Catholic Hospice of Miami writes, “Changing societal language to suit specific agendas is always a dangerous precedent to establish. For instance, what is currently referred to as assisted suicide flirts dangerously with what society has historically accepted to be murder. Individuals served by assisted suicide are referred to as patients when we could call them victims.”

SMITH SAYS: He is a prime sponsor of the Human Life Amendment which establishes personhood for every preborn child commencing at fertilization. He is also the sponsor of the Respect Life Act of 1999. He does not generally condone exceptions though he is in favor of the partial-birth abortion ban, which is not really a ban.

BONE MARROW PROGRESS: Stephen H. Bartelmez of the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI) has discovered that bone marrow stem cells have the ability to develop into any type of blood cell, and that there is a way to propagate these cells in the laboratory by use of “a chemical messenger called thrombopoietin.” The finding could be a boon to the treatment of cancer and genetic disorders.

So far 57 women have been paid for getting permanent birth control through the C.R.A.C.K. program.

Happy the man who has the God of Jacob to help him,
whose hope is fixed on Yahweh his God,
maker of heaven and earth,
and the sea, and all that these hold!
