An amazing man and priest tragically lost his life last week at the hands of a disturbed individual. Let us not reflect upon the wickedness of this murder, but upon the life Father Walker led, and upon the light he brought to this world when he lived. It is only then will we see the light and hand of Christ.
When a family member suffers, or is sick and dying, it is natural to want him to have the best care possible. But we must understand what proper care includes. A recent and tragic example explains why end-of-life care that supports the dignity of Christ’s children is of utmost importance.
When tragedy occurs, the tendency of most people is to ask, “Why?” We want to know why it happened and how it can be prevented in the future. These are certainly laudable goals. But maybe some reflection is needed as well reflection upon the values and morals in society and the changes that have taken place over the last several decades. Reflection upon the family, upon how we are raising our children, about the influences and the bombardment of immorality. If we are to effect change, we must first look here.
The destruction of the family is one of the greatest disasters of the last century. It has happened subtly, almost silently, and now we are left with the carnage. How will we alter the path that so many seem so willing to travel? Will we raise our voices in protest? If we want to make changes and save lives and souls, we must.
The skewed view of injustice in our country should make everyone take a step back and look hard at what it truly means to value the dignity of each and every human being. Yet we don’t see an outcry when innocent babies are aborted each and every second of the day. Babies cannot speak for themselves, so it is up to us to speak for them. True injustice lies in the silence.
End-of-life care is a crucial component to healthcare and one that has received much attention lately. With the push for people to sign advance directives, and many not knowing the implications of their signature, education is key.
As we enter into Holy Week, we are constantly reminded of God’s never-ending love for us of the torment Christ went through so that we may spend eternity with Him. But we must make that choice. We can choose to follow Him or we can choose to follow worldly things. There is no better time than Holy Week to examine our actions, to make changes, and to set ourselves straight. We must never forget the purpose of life to someday look Christ in the eye and be invited into His arms.
Teaching the truths about homosexuality, chastity, adultery, and how God wants us to live our lives is not always an easy thing to do. Nor is living that life. But God asks that we do our best nevertheless, for our ultimate goal is eternity with Him. We cannot plead ignorance. We cannot justify that we chose otherwise. God’s word is the truth, and though some may try to silence those who tell the truth, it doesn’t change the facts.
Some say ignorance is bliss, but when it comes to your health, ignorance can be a death sentence. With the changes in the medical community and its policies, this is certainly no time to plead ignorance. We must educate ourselves, our aging parents, and our families as to our wishes and to Church teaching. Today’s commentary will help us along this path.
As a society, we are pushing God further and further away from us. We put our faith in science when we should be putting it in God. We are even allowing science to take the place of God. If we continue on this path, we must be aware that, when we intentionally force God out of our lives here on Earth, we may be condemning ourselves to eternal life without Him as well.
Once thought of as blessings from God, babies are now merely commodities possessions to be tinkered with at whim. And, when they aren’t wanted, or when something goes wrong, we just discard them like trash and start over. Catholic clergy have spoken about this tragedy that has befallen our society, but not enough have used their voices, nor have they spoken loudly enough. We cannot sit back and watch this calamity unfold. It is time for them all to speak loudly.
