Week in Review – Time to Reflect on 2021 and Look Ahead to the Work Needed in 2022
This week we are wrapping up 2021. The Pro-Life This Week newsletter is sent out every Friday during the year. Since the next two Fridays are Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve respectively, we will not be publishing on those days. That makes this issue the last for 2021.
This year saw intense activity from all who oppose the wanton killing of preborn babies as well as from those who maintain that children created by God should not be protected and that those children’s mothers have a right to end their lives.
Pro-lifers can point to three positive developments this year.
The first is that there are now Safe Haven laws in every state. Although the details of each state’s law are unique, they all have the common outcome of allowing mothers who give birth to a child but do not have the means or desire to raise the child to confidentially turn him over to the state with no adverse consequences. Further information can be found by searching for the specific Safe Haven laws in your state.
Next comes the growth of the pro-life Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn declarations and ordinances. This year has seen the Sanctuary City movement spread outside of Texas, where it began. As we end 2021, there are now 41 Sanctuary Cities in Texas, Ohio, and Nebraska. Another 34 cities in Texas and Florida are considering joining the movement. While abortionists, like Planned Parenthood, have challenged these laws in courts, none has been overturned.
Finally, the third development this year is the unique method of the enforcement of laws that seeks to save babies’ lives. Those involved have developed a method of enforcement that does not involve state or local governments. Instead, the laws require enforcement by private citizens using civil lawsuits. This unique feature has—so far—stumped pro-aborts and courts on how to stop the laws. While some Sanctuary City ordinances used this technique, the Texas Heartbeat Law brought it to a new level. It is the existence of this means of enforcement that has resulted in the United States Supreme Court voting at least three times to allow enforcement of the law in Texas while court cases against it proceed. Out of fear of these lawsuits, Planned Parenthood has stopped doing most abortions in Texas since September 1, 2021.
As much as we applaud those who have developed the three things noted here, we must recognize that preborn babies in the United States are still being murdered daily. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its annual Abortion Surveillance Report this year and noted that the number of abortions in America has actually increased over each of the last two years.
This holiday season, we ask you to continue to pray for the preborn children. No one knows the exact number who died last year, especially since most abortions are now being committed at home using the abortion pill, but the death toll is at least 2,300 every day (even without counting those who die in IVF labs and those killed by so-called contraceptives)!
Pray that God, through His Blessed Mother, will grant the United States the graces we need to put an end to the slaughter in 2022.

Action Item of the Week – 9 Ways to Keep Christ in Christmas
Susan Ciancio, a writer for American Life League, created the follow action item on how you can keep Christ in Christmas.
Christmas is nearly here! And though it may look different this year, no one can cancel the true meaning of Christmas. Indeed, you cannot have Christmas without Christ.
The days leading up to Christmas morning often become a flurry of activity, with last-minute shopping, extended family visiting, lots of cooking, and of course, wrapping gifts. It goes by too quickly.
But though the next several days may get crazy, it’s important to keep Christ first and foremost in our minds. To help celebrate the real meaning of Christmas, we want to share some fun and easy ways to do this both before and on Christmas day.
- On Christmas, when you first wake up, before you even open any gifts, say Happy Birthday to Jesus. Teach your kids to do the same. Then take a few minutes to say some prayers of thanks for all your blessings. Pray as a family.
- Play this beautiful video set to Josh Groban’s “O Holy Night” for your family. It depicts the birth of Baby Jesus and the immense love and joy felt by both Mary and Joseph. It’s definitely a must-see video every Christmas. The pure love and happiness on Joseph’s face will make you weep!
- Everyone loves birthday gifts! Talk about what you can give Christ for His birthday. This is a great conversation to have with kids of any age. Explain how Christ only wants us to follow His will and be close to Him. Talk about what you can all do to better yourselves so that you will become closer to Christ. Help kids come up with ideas.
- Read the story of Christ’s birth from Luke chapter 2.
- Make a birthday cake as your dessert and sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus.
- Play a board game as a family. As you play, talk about how fun it is to do things as a family. Weave into the conversation a discussion about the Holy Family.
- Read Max Lucado’s An Angel’s Story aloud. This short book tells the story of Christ’s birth through the eyes of the angel Gabriel. (It will only take about 20 minutes.)
- Watch a Christmas movie or show, such as A Nativity Story, A Christmas Carol, or Charlie Brown’s Christmas. Then talk about the true meaning of Christmas.
- At the end of Christmas day, thank everyone again for their gifts. This includes Jesus, as we would have nothing without Him! Have everyone write a short note of thanks to Baby Jesus and place it under or around the manger scene.
Christmas is a wonderful day filled with fun, laughter, great food, and awesome gifts. And all of this is because of Christ’s immense gift of Himself to us. Let us never forget to give Him the gift of ourselves and our love.

New CDC data shows black preborn children made up 38.4 percent of U.S. abortions in 2019 compared to 33.4 percent white.
