Washington, D.C. (22 March 2009) – Judie Brown, president of American Life League, issued the following statement regarding President Barack Obama's planned address at the University of Notre Dame’s spring commencement where he is also set to receive an honorary degree.
“American Life League joins the Cardinal Newman Society and all Catholics of good will in condemning the University of Notre Dame’s defamation of Our Lady through its unconscionable invitation to the leading symbol, hero and darling of the culture of death.
"Among President Obama's countless attacks on the personhood of all human beings he has sanctioned federal funds used to abort children overseas; has allowed our tax dollars to support Orwellian embryonic stem cell research; has tapped rabidly pro-abortion appointees; attacked our freedom of religion and sought to strip us of our freedom of conscience.
"And yet the most prestigious Catholic university in the country, named after Our Lady, wants to honor Obama with an honorary degree. Notre Dame’s invitation is a disgrace to every Catholic in the United States.
"Notre Dame cannot maintain its identity as a Catholic university while lauding a man so completely dedicated to denying basic human rights, equal rights and civil rights to an entire class of human beings — preborn children.
"The university’s invitation is a heartbreaking breach of faith for the thousands of Notre Dame alumni dedicated to the service of souls and the Faith.
"We will do all in our power to activate our supporters and friends across the country to cease their funding of Notre Dame if the school does not rescind its invitation.
"In the name of Our Lady of Guadalupe – empress of the Americas and patroness of preborn children, American Life League will fight Notre Dame’s disgusting pandering to the culture of death – enemy of the Catholic Faith."
