Since last November’s election, when Americans elected a president who supports the protection of the lives of preborn human beings and rejected the pro-abortion candidate, the pro-abortion forces have fought hard to win four special elections that have taken place. So far, they have not won a single one.
The latest defeat came this week in the state of Georgia. In that election for a vacated seat in the US House of Representatives, pro-Planned Parenthood candidate Jon Ossoff ran against anti-Planned Parenthood candidate Karen Handel. Pundits predicted an Ossoff victory and money poured into his campaign. In the end, this would become the most expensive race for a congressional seat in history. The total money spent by both sides combined was over $55 million.
Handel used to be an executive at the Komen Foundation, but resigned after the organization first decided to stop funding Planned Parenthood and then reversed its position within a week. She wrote a book entitled Planned Bullyhood: The Truth Behind the Headlines about the Planned Parenthood Funding Battle with Susan G. Komen for the Cure about that experience. Planned Parenthood was very unhappy that Handel might become the next congresswoman from Georgia and reportedly spent over $700,000 to defeat her. Well, Karen won! With a vote of 52 percent to 48 percent, she defeated Ossoff.
When we combine Handel’s victory with the other loses by the abortion cartel, it is becoming clear that Americans are voting more pro-life.
In another development this week, Republicans in the US Senate introduced their version of the reconciliation bill (H.R. 1628). This is the special bill that takes all Medicaid funds away from Planned Parenthood for one year and also repeals and replaces parts of Obamacare. It is designed so that it should need only 51 votes to pass the Senate. There is still much discussion about the bill and there is no guarantee that it will pass. The Trump administration is pushing for a vote on the bill by the July 4 holiday recess of the Senate. That means we should know the results by next week, and Planned Parenthood could begin losing federal Medicaid funds in July or August.
If the bill passes the Senate, President Trump has said he will sign it. We are the closest we have ever been to taking $400 million away from Planned Parenthood!
