USCCB Member of Group Supporting Elena Kagan as SCOTUS Pick

Washington, D.C. (18 May 2010) – American Life League is renewing the call for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to withdraw membership from the Leadership Council on Civil and Human Rights.

The LCCHR group is engaged in an extensive campaign for confirmation of pro-abortion Supreme Court pick Elena KaganCatholic Advocate revealed this morning. The USCCB came under fire for membership in the LCCHR earlier in the year after it was revealed LCCHR supports abortion and same-sex marriage.

“Once again the USCCB has egg on its face,” said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “It is extremely sad that the representative organization for all of our Catholic bishops in the United States sees fit to pander repeatedly to pro-abortion organizations.  What a tragedy!  God save us from USCCB political correctness.”

Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, speaking for all the LCCHR members including the USCCB, said this about the Kagan nomination: “The President has nominated someone who is extremely well-qualified and who understands the lives of ordinary Americans … We believe she will uphold the Constitution and the law to provide equal justice and protect personal freedoms for everyone in America, not just a few.”

“Sadly, Ms. Kagan has already stated her intention to deny human rights to some Americans – those in the womb,” said Michael Hichborn, ALL’s lead researcher into the USCCB. “This scandalous state-of-affairs needs immediate attention. We’re calling on the USCCB to withdraw from this anti-marriage organization.”

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to death.  For more information or press inquiries, please contact Katie Walker at 540.659.4942.
