The Tyranny of ‘It’: New ALL Report Traces Tactics Used to Deny Human Personhood

Washington, D.C. (23 August 2010) – American Life League’s latest ALL Report, ‘The Fatal Formula’ looks at the arguments used by opponents of the movement to legally recognize the personhood of all human beings. Colorado’s groundbreaking Amendment 62 campaign is one such effort.

Throughout history, the same formula has been used repeatedly to justify abuses and even atrocities against various oppressed groups, the video explains.

“Nowhere is it clearer than in Colorado that today’s pro-life movement is the exact same movement Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life for,” said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “Preborn children, blacks, whites, Jews, gentiles, poor and rich alike are human persons equal in dignity with a fundamental right to equal protection under the law.”

Colorado’s proposed Amendment 62 would simply define the word “person” in the Colorado Constitution as meaning all human beings from the beginning of their biological development. Opponents argue that human beings in the womb are less than persons and do not deserve constitutional rights.

Using examples from the 1986 film “The Mission” and a “white paper” published by Planned Parenthood, ALL’s Michael Hichborn presents a compelling illustration of “the fatal formula” used to justify the denial of rights and eventual murder of human beings in the womb. “Statement of non-humanity, non-personhood + supporting excuses = underlying agenda,” he explains. “[Making] excuses for denying the humanity or personhood of individual human beings is done for one reason… It’s the only way to create a class of humans without any rights.”

Hichborn emphasizes, “The only reason anyone argues against an individual’s personhood or humanity is to deny those individuals their human rights so they can treat them however they like.”

“Recognizing human personhood isn’t about debating when or where or how some humans are persons and others aren’t,” he said. “It’s about human rights and dignity.”

Under the banner of “Persons, not property,” the Amendment 62 campaign seeks to end this cycle of dehumanization.

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to death.  For more information or press inquiries, please contact Katie Walker at 540.659.4942.
