In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina we learned of a rescue effort that resulted in the protection of 1,200 human embryos, previously residing in canisters in a fertility clinic, had to be moved to a hospital prior to the hurricane. Then, when the hurricane hit, the electricity went out in the hospital, and state troopers plus members of the National Guard rescued the embryos.
The director of the clinic, Roman Pyrzak, told the press around 20 people were involved in the rescue effort. He also told the press, "They have the potnetnial to be live people."
We wish he had made it clear that each of the 1,200 rescued human embryos are human beings who are simply living in state of suspended animation. As Dr. Jerome Lejeune explained more than ten years ago, these children are living in a state of "suspended animation."
