Judie Brown, president of American Life League, the nation’s largest grassroots pro-life educational organization, issued the following statement denouncing the latest move in the U.S. House of Representatives to further the inhumane practice of human embryonic stem cell research:
H.R. 810 advances the act of killing preborn persons, and that is completely unconscionable. Human life is not something that should be tampered with at our whim. Terminating human embryos for research is ethically and morally corrupt. It is nothing short of murder.
Unfortunately, President Bush’s current policy limiting federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research to cells obtained from human embryos before August 2001 is a fatally flawed position.
No human being has the right to decide that any particular group of children is not worth saving. The president’s policy has created a slippery slope on which America is descending. If passed, H.R. 810 will repeal the current policy so that human embryos can be killed for their stem cells regardless of when they were initially created.
The pro-life community must speak up now to put a halt to this sanctioned killing. There are viable and effective alternatives to human embryonic stem cell research that must be expanded. Stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood and adult tissues are but two of the morally acceptable avenues that have shown great promise.
Any person who considers himself pro-life must recognize the inhumanity of human embryonic stem cell research and persuade lawmakers to bring this practice to an end. We can never build a true culture of life when we allow the most vulnerable and innocent of our society to be sacrificed.
