abortion

ABORT THE DISABLED? Analyzing the current practices and public policies relative to disabled newborns and abortion, Wellesley professor Adrienne Asch argues that since it should be as acceptable to live with a disability as without one, policies must reflect an appreciation of human beings consonant with the value of life rather than the quality. She argues, “When our professions can envision such communication . . . prenatal technology can help people to make decisions without implying that only one decision is right. If the child with a disability is not a problem for the world, and the world is not a problem for the child, perhaps we can diminish our desire for prenatal testing and selective abortion and can comfortably welcome and support children of all characteristics.”

UN: Definitions may get in the way of what some reported as a victory when President Clinton agreed to terms set forth by members of Congress regarding payment for abortion and further funding for the United Nations. For example, in Bangladesh the law prohibits abortion except to save a mother’s life, but the government of Bangladesh and the NGO (Non-Government Organization) Family Planning Association of Bangladesh, an affiliate of International Planned Parenthood, condone a practice called “menstrual regulation” which is really abortion through the tenth week of pregnancy.

WISCONSIN: Assembly Bill 579/SB920 has identified potential problems with a proposed law allegedly designed to protect children born with serious birth difficulties. The formation of a “council” that “may view abortion as a means of birth defect prevention,” and the potential for that council to advocate anti-life measures must not go unnoticed, according to Legislative Director Mary Matuska. Such registries exist in Texas and Iowa.

INSURANCE COVERAGE? Peter Hart Research has completed a U.S. survey on attitudes regarding infertility, treatment for it and the question of insurance coverage. The survey finds that the majority of Americans believe that health insurance coverage should be provided for such treatment. The survey was commissioned by the Geneva-based Bertarelli Foundation, the first international foundation to provide a global forum on infertility. The foundation hosted its first conference at National Institutes of Health, November 19-21, 1999. It also announced the appointment of Geraldine Ferraro to its board. It is claimed that the Bertarelli board is composed of world-renowned leaders in reproductive health.

COMMENT: Curious that no mention is made of the basic causes of infertility: sexually transmitted disease, abortion and the promiscuous behavior that usually leads to both!

G.W. BUSH: The Texas Governor told a high school audience that being pro-life means “ban partial birth abortion, [support] parental notification laws and [support] stronger adoption laws.”

COMMENT: Wrong, Governor. Protecting every single human being, each a person, from the time each life begins at fertilization! That is what being pro-life means. Try again.

WHO IS CRAZY? Kate Reinish, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood, commenting on congressional funding of abstinence-only education programs, was quoted in the Denver Post: “How many teenagers are going to believe instruction by Congress that sex outside of marriage will make you crazy and physically harm you? Our fear is that many of these programs are based on religion, not public health. People will be learning fear and shame instead of responsibility. They’ll be taught that a wedding ring will protect more than a condom.”
