abortion

MEDICARE: In the July 1999 Nationwide Insurance Enterprise of Columbus, Ohio Medicare Newsletter, a listing of abortion coverage as of October 1, 1998, is provided. According to this list, abortion is not covered under the Medicare program except in the cases of rape, incest, or “in cases where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness. This includes a life endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself. The physician must certify the woman is in danger of death unless an abortion is performed.” Nine separate codes for abortion are listed.

PHARMACISTS FOR LIFE: Lloyd Duplantis, Jr., PD, exposes the dangers of such coverage: “Not only is this situation economically shortsighted, it is fundamentally unfair. Women of childbearing age currently spend 68 percent more in out-of-pocket health-care costs than men-and most of these expenses are related to the high cost of reproductive health-related supplies and services. Contraceptive use has a proven track record of serious health problems, compromising the health of women and children while enriching the coffers of the promoters of these products. The use of ‘contraceptive’ chemicals and devices has increased ‘unplanned’ pregnancies and thus abortions, chemically and surgically.”

BREAST CANCER: Klim McPherson, professor of public health epidemiology, writes in the British Medical Journal: “use of oral contraception could be an important part of a breast cancer initiation process without being an initiator itself, simply by speeding up cell proliferation rates at vulnerable times, whatever they may be.” John Wilks, MPS, MACPP, author of A Consumer’s Guide to the Pill and Other Drugs confirms McPherson’s findings with a further series of citations.

population control

CHINA: The official Chinese news agency reports that Werner Fornos of the Population Institute looks forward to working with the Chinese government in teaching developing countries “to manage their economy and social system.” However, Population Research Institute Director Steven Mosher has pointed out that the Chinese one-child policy is still imposed, and that even though the Chinese say that there are 32 provinces (counties) in China where the policy is not in force, evidence contradicts that statement. “Nafis Sadik, as executive director of the UNFPA, admitted that parents in those counties will ‘still be subject to a “social compensation fee” if they decide to have more children that [sic] is recommended by policy.'”

pregnancy

CANCER: Commenting on the possibility of cancer cells moving from a mother to her preborn child during pregnancy, Robert Resnik, M.D., says that such a case is “relatively rare.” He points out that “the long-term outcomes of the children of women who received chemotherapy during the second or third trimester are generally good. Among 43 children whose mothers were treated for hematologic cancers, including 20 treated during the first trimester, there were no instances of congenital malformation, and all the children had normal physical and cognitive function when examined between 3 and 19 years of age.” And “in practical terms, acute leukemia is virtually the only condition requiring immediate chemotherapy in a pregnant woman.”

COMMENT: Resnik gives priority to the life of the mother over that of the child, but his comments suggest that such a decision, in the case of cancer in the mother, is extremely rare in this modern age of medical treatment.

reflection for prayer

All things have an end, and two things, life and death, are side by side set before us, and each man will go to his own place. Just as there are two coinages, one of God and the other of the world, each with its own image, so unbelievers bear the image of this world, and those who have faith with love bear the image of God the Father through Jesus Christ. Unless we are ready through his power to die in the likeness of his passion, his life is not in us.

SPAIN: Leading the world in organs made available for transplantation, a report identifies the key to the country’s “success” as the fact that “in Spain, any person is a potential donor if he or she has not previously expressed a contrary will. If the person has never talked about the issue, this is also interpreted as an implicit authorization for organ removal.”

PHYSICIANS SPEAK OUT: Analyzing the July 8 Washington Post article on oral sex among middle school students in Washington, D.C., John Diggs, M.D. of the Consortium of State Physicians Resource Councils points to Planned Parenthood, its Teenwire web site and direct government involvement when he comments, “Children are playing with fire and the U.S. Government is providing the matches.”

population control
