You’ve Got Mail . . .

By Judie Brown

Some of us remember using the email service called America Online back in the late 1980s/early ‘90s. And we recall the voice that came into our computer, alerting us, “You’ve got mail.” It was a clever marketing tactic voiced by a man name Elwood Edwards.

But AOL was not quite as cutting edge in its creative use of computer email service as was Margaret Sanger and her use of the US mail. According to the National Women’s History Museum,

In 1914, Sanger launched her own feminist publication, The Woman Rebel, advocating for birth control. She was charged with violating the Comstock laws and fled to England, though had friends share a pamphlet she authored on contraceptive techniques in her absence. She returned a year later to stand trial, but when her five-year-old daughter died unexpectedly, public pressure led to the charges against Sanger being dropped.

Sanger pioneered much of what is today identified as the pro-choice movement, also known as the abortion rights movement. Today, the most recent news regarding the abortion pill should come as no surprise.

We are talking about mail-order abortion. The availability of the abortion pill through the mail may not sound dangerous, but it is in fact an emerging industry of death that started years ago when the first birth control pills were marketed without public acknowledgment that they could and did cause an early-day (within the first seven days of pregnancy) abortion. Such pills, properly identified as abortifacients, can cause the human embryonic baby to die before she is properly implanted in the womb of her mother. It is as if in our society’s blasé attitude toward human dignity we have lost touch with the basic scientific facts about the development of the human person, even though that is how each of us got to where we are today.

Missouri senator Josh Hawley nailed it when he said that the abortion pill “is turning every mailbox in America into a Planned Parenthood.” He continued, “We cannot allow this to go on. We need to ban it.”

We are sincerely grateful that the senator has brought this matter to light, but sadly he is just one voice in a sea of political lightweights when dealing with the killing of preborn children. The majority of his colleagues refuse to step up and agree with Hawley because the most valuable aspect of their lives is reelection. This is political reality, and as usual, it is costing human lives at an alarming rate.

At the state level, however, things are looking a bit better. In a surprising move, Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill said in reference to sending abortion pills through the mail, “This is not healthcare; it’s drug dealing.” According to LifeNews, “Murrill says the fight is about whether New York, California and Massachusetts can use ‘shield’ laws to protect people who mail abortion drugs into a state that has banned elective abortion and chosen to protect unborn children.”

Shielding those who kill preborn babies rather than acting in ways that protect these children from the deadly effects of abortion pills, not to mention every type of abortion, is abhorrent. But in our nation today it appears to be business as usual, and that prompted me to think about the “you’ve got mail” message.

Responding to the conniving ways of the abortion cartel, we choose to employ the most powerful antidote on earth, devout words spoken to the Lord who created heaven and earth. He stands with us, with His children, and with Truth.

You’ve got prayers!
