Pro-Life This Week – February 28, 2020
Week in Review – “Pro-life” bills not moving; SCOTUS up next; Lenten guide; Free day
Last week, we told you of the two bills (Pain-Capable and Born-Alive) that were supposed to be voted on in the US Senate this week. Prior to the votes, the Democrats staged a filibuster. In order to stop the filibuster and vote on the bills, 60 votes were needed. There are just 53 Republicans in the Senate and, predictably, the filibuster stood and both bills were canceled. The votes on stopping the filibuster for both bills were very much along party lines, with just a couple of senators from each party switching sides.
Pro-life attention has now turned to the US Supreme Court where the justices will hear a challenge next week to a Louisiana law that requires abortionists in the state to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. What makes this case so interesting is not the actual law, but the fact that a couple of years ago the Supreme Court found an almost identical Texas law unconstitutional. There has been a great deal of speculation on why SCOTUS agreed to hear this case. Over a hundred members of Congress sent a letter to SCOTUS asking them to use this case to reexamine Roe v. Wade. The difference is that the current court has two new justices, appointed by Trump, who were not part of the Texas decision. What will happen is anyone’s guess. Although the hearing is next week, a decision is not expected until June.
This week was the beginning of Lent 2020—a time for prayer and repentance leading up to Holy Week and, then, Easter. There are many books and guides published to help you make this season fruitful for your spiritual life. A great new guide this year is published by the Culture of Life Studies Program and is available free of charge. CLSP describes this as a “Pro-Life Lenten Journey for you and your families. It’s the perfect conversation starter for your students and children—young and old alike! We draw on wisdom from the saints, Scripture, and the Catechism to inspire you to live a culture of life this Lent and beyond. Then we offer a short encouraging reflection each day along with easy-to-implement examples for how to help build a culture that respects the dignity of all human beings. You can participate by following online or by downloading the free guide.”
The largest 40 Days for Life campaign in history began this week in 507 cities worldwide. Find the 40 Days for Life location nearest you. If there is not a location near you, go to Planned Parenthood anyway. Pray, be a public witness to the goodness of God in the face of evil, and offer help and hope to those who have neither. With love and sacrifice comes great grace. You will undoubtedly have the opportunity to love those who are hurting, to help those who are in despair, and to be a part of the Body of Christ—the part that cares enough to walk out of the prayer closet and onto the streets to speak up for those who have no voice, and to offer help to those who have lost all hope. It may be a Lent you will never forget.
Finally this week, please give some thought to what you will do with your “free” day. Every year has 365 days, except when you get an extra one. This year, that extra day is tomorrow, February 29, 2020. It’s a day when you can be with your spouse, your children, your neighbors, and your God. Here, at the start of Lent, it can be your day of prayer and reflection. Make it a good one. After all, you won’t get another free day until 2024. Make this one count.
ALL in the News – Judie Calls on CA Bishop to Enforce Canon 915; Pro-life Radio Show
This week, American Life League director of media relations, Katie Brown, released an open letter to all pro-life organizations. This letter addressed “pro-life” organizations that call for the regulation of abortion rather than the abolition of abortion.
On February 21, Jim Sedlak was featured in a One News Now article concerning Planned Parenthood’s vulgar St. Valentine’s Day traditions.
Judie’s weekly commentaries continue to be featured as a column on Renew America.
Jim Sedlak’s Pro-Life Activism from Creation to Death is a weekly talk-radio program on the Radio Maria USA network. The show can be heard live every Friday at noon (Eastern Time) and is repeated on Saturdays (10 PM).

T-shirt everywhere you go!
Why do you guys do this?
NPLTD was started in the 1990s and our goal has always remained the same: to empower young people to speak up and defend the most vulnerable among us, the elderly, the disabled and the innocent babies killed through abortion.
Where should I wear my shirt?
We encourage you to wear your T-shirt everywhere you go all day long. You could wear it to school, to work, to the store, or around the neighborhood. You may never know the impact it will have on those who might see it!
Will I get in trouble for wearing my pro-life shirt in school?
It’s your right to wear a pro-life T-shirt. If anyone questions that right, we can help!
Contact Mary at CLSP: 833-544-4815
Special thanks to Thomas More Law Center for legal support.

Pro-life Social Media – TikTok: The Platform for Celebrating Abortion
How do we reconcile the claim that abortion involves two victims, mother and child, with the callousness found on social media apps? It appears TikTok has become the go-to video app for post-abortive mothers to celebrate the death and destruction of their preborn children.
There’s nothing I can say about this degenerate broad that won’t get me kicked off Twitter. pic.twitter.com/cFRFHZWjrn— Mindy Robinson 🇺🇸 (@iheartmindy) February 8, 2020
The video was copied to other social media platforms. When the video went viral, the original video creator was forced to admit her story was meant to be a joke. But the damage has been done. Other TikTok users, seeing a golden ticket to instant virality, are posting abortion videos that may or may not be real.
(Warning: some videos contain explicit lyrics.)
That the video creator in the clip above is actually getting an abortion is suspect. An ultrasound is not an indicator of an abortion procedure; it is likely a confirmation of pregnancy. Planned Parenthood policy would not allow a friend to loiter in the abortion room and record videos. The Planned Parenthood exterior as seen in the video belongs to the Eagle Rock Health Center in Pasadena. It offers abortion-referrals only. Granted, the video creator could in all possibility be abortion-minded and has scheduled her child for execution. Nevertheless, treating the death of a preborn child reveals a disregard for human life that can’t be quantified as “victimhood.” The pregnant mother knows there’s a developing human being in there and she’s content with exploiting his/her death (real or fake) for maximum views.
But TikTok isn’t exclusively a platform for abortion parties. Pro-life advocates have adopted the app as well. Some clips worth watching:
