Planned Parenthood training abortionists at Yale

Planned Parenthood of Connecticut is training abortionists at Yale Medical School. Life Site News did a story on it this week and we reprint the story below with permission:

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, August 23, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Ob/gyn residents at Yale's School of Medicine must undergo training in abortion procedures in a required residency program established by Planned Parenthood's Connecticut branch (PPC).

Second year ob/gyn residents will have to complete two four-week rotations with PPC for training in abortion techniques such as vacuum suction, medical abortions, and other "family planning" services in a program entitled Family Planning/Ambulatory Surgery.

"Yale is very satisfied with the experience and training the residents are receiving at PPC and are especially happy with the number of patients the residents see," said Mary Bawza, chief operating officer of PPC to Planned Parenthood's Choice! magazine.

Although the course is required in the residency curriculum, ob/gyn residents do not have to participate in any abortions if they sign a paper that states they believe abortion is against their "personal/religious" beliefs. However, residents cannot opt of learning the theoretical applications of the program, including techniques related to still-birth, miscarriage, and complications related to abortion. Students also cannot opt out of performing ultrasounds on women intending to have abortions.

PPC established the course last year as part of a frantic campaign to replace the imploding and aging population of abortionists, whose numbers have declined 37% since the 1980s. Although worried about their population decline, PPC seems oddly determined to spread their abortion practices deeper into the heartland of the United States claiming studies indicate 87% of US counties and 97% of rural counties have no abortionists.

We encourage you to alert people in your area about this Yale killing program. It should be of special interest to any Yale alumni in your area.

In addition, you should send a message of outrage to the following:

EC OTC: Just the beginning

Since last week's Wednesday STOPP Report, the news has been full of the FDA's approval of over-the-counter status for Plan B, the so-called emergency contraceptive that kills babies in the womb by preventing implantation.

In the following item, our full-time researcher, Joey Kerlin, takes a look at this development in light of other activities at Planned Parenthood.

We know that Margaret Sanger's plan for access to abortion began with contraception. However, what may be surprising to realize is that Planned Parenthood's plan for unrestricted, non-prescription, access to birth control begins with so called "emergency contraception."

On August 24 Planned Parenthood Federation of America posted an article on its web site that praised the Columbia-Willamette affiliate (PPCW) for "revolutionizing birth control access, and inspiring health care providers across the country to do the same."

The article praises the work PPCW has done to streamline a way of selling and distributing contraception online. According to the article, "the goal of the program was to remove barriers to reliable contraception." PPCW began its efforts in November 2002 with "EC Online" and by April 2004 "Pills Online" had already sprung up.

The reason this is so interesting is that the day this article was posted on its web site was also the day that the FDA approved the over-the-counter distribution of Plan B for women 18 and older. You may remember from previous Wednesday STOPP Reports that in the explanation of the second goal of its 25 year plan Planned Parenthood says that it will "push the edge for universal access to birth control".

We can see that Planned Parenthood has been following through on its promise. With its "EC Online" and eventually the "Pill Online" program PPCW has been "pushing the edge" for the widespread use and acceptance of all forms of contraception. Planned Parenthood's role in pushing the FDA to approve the over-the-counter access of Plan B is just another aspect of this same push.

The article on PPCW notes, "Starting with emergency contraception (EC) and moving on to other birth control pills, patches and rings, a wide range of contraception options are now available to women." It is evident that Planned Parenthood is using "emergency contraception" to pave the way for unrestricted and widespread access to all forms of contraception. We must be on guard for the impending fight against Planned Parenthood's push for over-the-counter access for every kind of contraceptive pill and device that kills babies and hurts mothers.

With the decision on Plan B, the FDA has unleashed an attack on children in the womb that may dwarf the murders cause by surgical abortion. Many pro-life groups have concentrated their efforts on stopping surgical abortions and have avoided getting involved in the killing of babies in the womb by so-called contraceptive products. With the FDA action, everyone in the pro-life movement should realize that the time has now come to address all the babies killed in the womb by the culture of death.

To get more information on killing through contraceptives, we recommend the current efforts of the Pro-Life Action League. They are offering a series of free teleseminars as well as a conference in September to address this topic.

Planned Parenthood's attack on the preborn children is taking on a whole new dimension. When the events of the last week are taken in context with PP's opening of express clinics in shopping malls, mothers will soon be able to kill their children simply by buying off-the-shelf products at the PP store. May God have mercy on us.

Where Planned Parenthood taxpayer funding comes from

There is much confusion on government funding of Planned Parenthood. Many people think it gets all its money through Title X of the Health and Human Services Act. That is not true. Although Title X is one of the bigger sources of PP funds, it is not the only one.

In 2003, the federal Government Accounting Office produced a report on federal money going to Planned Parenthood. You can view that report online.

It shows a total of $162 million going to Planned Parenthood in 2001. Of that amount, it documents that:

  • $60.9 million was from Title XIX - through the Medicaid Waiver program
  • $58.7 million was from Title X.
  • $19.0 million was from Social Services Block Grants
  • $ 6.0 million from Child and Maternal Health Services Block Grants
  • $17.4 million from other federal programs

Planned Parenthood reported, in its annual report (covering the period from July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002), receiving $240 million in government money. Thus, the federal portion accounted for about 70 percent of the total; state and local funds made up the rest.

Title X money accounts for only about 24 percent of PP's total government income.

The biggest single source of PP government money is Medicaid Waiver programs which gave Planned Parenthood $60.9 million in 2001.

In its latest annual report, Planned Parenthood says it received $272.7 million in total government money. Although it did not break down the details, from the previous data we estimate that about $190 million is from federal sources and the remaining $83 million is from state and local governments.

ALL research on state funding

For several months, American Life League has been conducting extensive research of state funding of Planned Parenthood. While this research is not yet complete, we will give you what we have so far.

We have collected data from 46 states (California, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington have yet to report):

  • The following six states report that they give NO state money to PP (note that the Planned Parenthood affiliate operating in these states may be receiving federal money):
    • Idaho
    • Montana
    • Oklahoma
    • South Dakota
    • Utah
    • West Virginia.

  • The following five states report the highest dollar amounts:
    • Texas: $21 million
    • Oregon: $11.9 million
    • Illinois: $5.2 million
    • New Jersey: $4.9 million
    • Wisconsin: $3.6 million

When we complete our research, we will publish the dollar amount reported by every state.

What you can do

This is an election year. Every seat in the United States House of Representatives and one-third in the U.S. Senate are up for election. In addition, many states will be electing their state legislatures.

You can help fight Planned Parenthood tax funding by:

  • Using the information on taxpayer funding above to let people in your area know that Planned Parenthood gets $272 million in taxpayer money annually. Many people simply do not know this and become outraged when they find out. You can let people know by:
    • Writing letters to the editor
    • Calling local talk radio shows
    • Bringing up the funding at meetings of groups you belong to
    • Talking with friends and family
    • Sending everyone to sign the petition against taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.

  • Questioning every congressional candidate on whether they will vote against Planned Parenthood funding.

  • Questioning every state-wide elected official on whether they will cut off state funding to Planned Parenthood.

If we are to win this battle, politicians need to know that this is an issue of great concern to the American people. When every one of you brings up the issue during the election campaigning, they will begin to see that it is something they must stop.

Spiritual bouquet for Bishop Yanta

Several weeks ago we told you that Bishop John Yanta of Amarillo, Texas will be turning 75 on October 2. Pro-lifers will honor this great pro-life bishop, who has closed down 17 of the 19 Planned Parenthood clinics that were in his diocese in 1997, by giving him a spiritual bouquet on his birthday.

We have been collecting a list of prayers and other acts and sacrifices people are pledging for the bishop's intentions. These include rosaries, Masses, offerings of the reception of Holy Communion, individual prayers, holy hours, Divine Mercy Chaplets and more.

If you would like to honor this wonderful man and great pro-life leader, please let us know what prayers or other spiritual exercises you will do for his intentions. Send an e-mail to Jim Sedlak. You can also send a card to American Life League, P.O. Box 1350, Stafford, VA 22555.

We will include everything you pledge in a spiritual bouquet card to the bishop. To be included, we need to hear from you as soon as possible.
