Abortion bans and "trigger laws"

The fight against Planned Parenthood and abortion is strengthening all across the country. American Life League recently worked with folks in Michigan who were seeking to get a ban on abortion written into their state constitution. Although they did not succeed this year, the momentum has begun and they plan to build on that momentum for next year.

You are aware of what is happening in South Dakota and the all-out effort to ban medical and surgical abortions in the state. The law has already been passed, but there is a referendum on the ballot in November and pro-lifers in the state are fighting hard for "yes" vote on referred law 6. American Life League is doing whatever we can to support the pro-lifers in South Dakota and we encourage all of you to do the same. They are in need of prayers, people and finances. Get more info online.

Louisiana recently passed a "trigger law" banning most abortions in the state. We were disappointed when they included an exception of life of the mother in the law. These types of exceptions are never necessary and do nothing but allow a loophole for abortion on demand to continue.

Many more states are considering outright bans and trigger laws. A trigger law is one that will become effective as soon as Roe v. Wade is overturned. We at American Life League are encouraging pro-lifers all across the country to support both the outright bans and the trigger laws - as long as they protect all babies without exception. We have never supported legislation with exceptions and we do not support bans or trigger laws that include them. Now is the time for us to stand strong for the babies. As ultimate success appears, after 33 years, to be within our grasp, now is not the time to back down. We must save all the babies, all the time.

Recently, news media have reported that a state legislator in Texas (the state that spawned the original Roe v. Wade lawsuit) intends to introduce a trigger law in that state during the session that begins in early 2007. That's fantastic!

So let us go forth and support the bans and trigger laws in states like Texas, but let's never agree to the killing of even a single human being through exceptions.

National Pro-life Memorial Day

As most pro-lifers are aware, the decriminalization of abortion in the United States did not come about because of the votes of our elected officials in Washington. No, it was dictated to the American people through our courts and, in particular by decisions of the United States Supreme Court in 1973. By the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions, and subsequent decisions, the Supreme Court unleashed the war on the preborn in this country that has claimed the lives of 47 million babies by surgical abortion.

Once a year, on the day of the opening of the new United States Supreme Court session, Americans come together in memory of those who have died through judicial edict.

This year, National Pro-life Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, October 2. On that day, thousands of pro-lifers will gather at their local abortion mills, Planned Parenthood offices and courthouses in memory of our dead children.

We encourage everyone to plan an event that day - especially outside of Planned Parenthood. We also encourage you to wear the official Pro-life Memorial Day t-shirt. Although you can certainly honor the babies wearing any pro-life shirt, there is always something very moving when everyone has the same shirt. This year's shirt features the picture of a baby in the womb with the inscription "Never Known … Not Forgotten."

For more information on events in which you can participate or how to order shirts for yourself and your group, go to ProLifeMemorialDay.com.

Sign the Pro-life Memorial Day petition

As part of our efforts to gain national attention for the babies that have died, we are asking President Bush to officially proclaim the first Monday of every October as Pro-life Memorial Day.

You will recall that President Bush said, "We share a great goal - to work toward a day when every child is welcomed in life and protected by law."

What better way to encourage the nation to do this than by setting aside this day, by presidential proclamation, to remember abortion's innocent victims?

You can sign the petition online.

We're in Amarillo, Texas next week

Our fall speaking schedule begins a bit early this year as American Life League's vice president, Jim Sedlak, will be speaking at the Eucharistic Congress in Amarillo, Texas next week. The event takes place on August 25 and 26 at the Amarillo Civic Center. For more information on the Eucharistic Congress and on the times when Jim is scheduled to speak, check online.

You can view our full fall schedule of speaking engagements online.

Mark your calendar

Get out your calendar and block out 90 minutes starting at 9 PM Eastern (6 Pacific) on Tuesday, September 12th. Over the next few weeks, don't let anything else crowd out that space in your schedule.

Trust us -- you won't want to miss this!

On the evening of September 12, American Life League will be providing a select group of individuals a groundbreaking FREE educational opportunity that could galvanize the national effort to stop Planned Parenthood. Watch this report over the coming weeks to learn more and to find out how you can get in on this history-making training.
