Chemical Abortions at Planned Parenthood
Last week we brought you Planned Parenthood's numbers for the abortions it claims to have committed in 2004. The 255,015 abortions included not only surgical abortions, but also medical abortions (RU-486).
What Planned Parenthood does not count or report are chemical abortions.
What is chemical abortion?
These are deaths in the womb caused by products and chemicals that allow fertilization to take place, but prevent the newly created human person from implanting in her mother's womb.
According to the manufacturers of many reversible contraceptives and of emergency contraception, these products work in one of three ways:
- By preventing ovulation
- By preventing fertilization, if ovulation does take place
- By preventing implantation, if fertilization happens.
It is the third method of operation that will result in the death of a newly-created person. A unique human being is created at fertilization and will implant in her mother's womb five to seven days later. If she can't implant, she dies.
But, you may ask, if these contraceptives sometimes allow fertilization to occur, how can Planned Parenthood say it prevents pregnancy? The answer comes from language changes implemented by the culture of death. Back in 1965, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists redefined pregnancy as beginning at implantation, not at fertilization. This created a cover-up for millions of babies to die before they could implant, and thus nobody counts their deaths.
By reversible contraception
In its annual service report, Planned Parenthood reports on the type of "contraceptive method" used by its clients. According to Planned Parenthood, the percentages of the various contraceptives chosen by its clients in 2004 were:

Of these various methods, manufacturers of the following types say they work some of the time by preventing implantation: Oral; Progestin-only Injectibles; Combined Hormone Patch; Combined Hormone Ring; and IUD. According to Planned Parenthood 65.6% of its clients use one of these five methods. In its Annual Service Report, Planned Parenthood states that it has a total of 2,347,352 reversible contraceptive clients.
This means that 1,539,862 Planned Parenthood clients use one of the "contraceptive" methods that work some of the time by ending the life of a human person by preventing implantation.
Now, there is no way of knowing how often these products kill a child in the womb. STOPP has read estimates ranging from once every two years, to once a month.
We have decided, for the purpose of this report, to be conservative in claiming how many babies die due to the contraceptive business at Planned Parenthood. Thus, we will use the number that each contraceptive client of Planned Parenthood will have a baby created at fertilization and have it die because it cannot implant once every two years.
This would calculate to an estimated 769,931 dead babies in 2004.
By Emergency Contraception
Not all chemical abortions at Planned Parenthood are caused by "reversible contraception." Planned Parenthood also sells what it calls Emergency Contraception. These pills are basically a mega-dose of the oral contraceptives and work the same way. Some of the time they kill human persons in the womb by preventing implantation.
Planned Parenthood reported it sold 983,537 EC kits in 2004. Once again, it is impossible to determine exactly how many times this product prevents implantation. In this instance, STOPP will use a conservative estimate that EC prevents implantation of an already-created human person at least 10% of the time.
Using these numbers, we estimate that 98,353 babies died at PP in 2004 as the result of Emergency Contraception.
Total estimated chemical abortion deaths at Planned Parenthood in 2004
Estimated number who died through reversible contraception: 769,931
Estimated number who died through emergency contraception: 98,353
Adding the numbers above, we calculate that, in addition to the 255,015 babies Planned Parenthood admits to killing through medical and surgical abortions, it is responsible for:
Total estimated PP chemical abortion deaths of 868,284 babies
How do I use this data?
In addition to the mere fact that Planned Parenthood is responsible for the deaths of an estimated 800,000 babies a year that nobody even talks about, this data is extremely important. You can use these numbers in the following ways:
- Planned Parenthood claims that its contraceptive sales prevent abortions. You now have the numbers to show that it is likely that PP kills almost three times as many babies with its so-called contraceptives than with its abortions.
- Many corporations and foundations claim that they do not give to Planned Parenthood's abortion business, but earmark the money for family planning programs. These estimates show that PP's family planning business likely kills well into the hundreds of thousands of babies a year.
- Planned Parenthood claims that abortion is just a small part of its business. Yet, if we add the chemical abortion estimates to the medical and surgical abortion totals, PP clients kill 1,123,299 babies a year. PP claims to have 2,933,101 unduplicated clients. Thus, according to these projections, 38 per cent of its clients may be involved in abortion. Not an insignificant number.
- Many government officials claim taxpayer money does not pay for abortions at Planned Parenthood. Yet Planned Parenthood gets over $65 million from Title X, which pays for "contraceptive" products that kill babies through chemical abortions.
You now have the information. Whether or not more than 800,000 babies a year will continue to die unnoticed is up to you.
