The “other” abortions at Planned Parenthood

Thus far in this report we have given a lot of data about the surgical abortions performed at Planned Parenthood facilities. Despite the growing numbers, surgical abortions are performed at only 17 percent of PP facilities (148 out of 850).

Does this mean that the remainder of PP facilities have no involvement in abortion? The answer is no. In addition to surgical abortions, all Planned Parenthood facilities are involved in providing abortions using chemical and hormonal products.

It is a recognized fact that most of today's birth control devices actually work, a percentage of the time, by allowing fertilization to take place and then preventing the implantation of the already created human being. This fact is documented in Planned Parenthood's own literature.

Because of definition changes in 1965 by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, there is disagreement on whether or not these deaths should be called abortions but all agree human beings die. For our purposes, we will refer to them as "early abortions."

Early abortions

PPFA's Annual Report documents that, in 1997, it had 1,607,315 female birth control customers who selected a method of birth control. The number of those customers that bought products that sometimes act by causing early abortions are:

  • Birth Control Pill 1,017,217
  • Injectables 219,179
  • IUD 14,987
  • Norplant 11,240
  • Emergency Contraception 39,245

PPFA states in its Annual Report that all of its affiliates now offer emergency contraception. Since they all also offer the other products that cause early abortions, every Planned Parenthood facility is involved in the abortion business.

The estimates of how many early abortions are caused by the products listed above vary. A report published by the Study of Abortion Deaths Commission estimates the following:

¥ Six percent to 30 percent of women using the pill will have one early abortion a year. ¥ On the average, a woman using the IUD will have 2–3 early abortions each year. ¥ One the average, a woman using injectables will have 1–2 early abortions each year. ¥ A woman using Norplant will have one early abortion each year.

Using these estimates, and using a midrange number of 15 percent for the pill and 10 percent for emergency contraception, Planned Parenthood's customers will have approximately 526,000 early abortions each year.
