Planned Parenthood Federation of America 2003-04 Annual Report - the analysis.
"Increases in abortions, more money from taxpayers' pockets and bigger profit margins - all while clinics are closing down and donations are dwindling. That is the state of Planned Parenthood," said Jim Sedlak, executive director of American Life League's STOPP International, in response to the release of Planned Parenthood Federation of America's 2003-2004 Annual Report.
STOPP International, which has monitored Planned Parenthood's operations for 20 years, provided its exclusive analysis of the latest report and put it in historical perspective. Sedlak pointed out facts and trends in the last year:
- Planned Parenthood increased the number of abortions at its own facilities by 6.1 percent to 244,628, bringing the total number of babies killed at Planned Parenthood facilities since 1970 to 3.5 million.
- Planned Parenthood took in an estimated $104 million from its surgical abortion business - the first time this number has surpassed $100 million - accounting for more than one-third of the organization's $302.6 million clinic income.
- Abortions accounted for 34 percent of the organization's overall clinic income and 65 percent of its increased clinic income over last year's total.
- Planned Parenthood aborted 138 children for every adoption referral to an outside agency. During Gloria Feldt's first full year as president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (1997), the group's abortion/adoption ratio was 18:1. Throughout her tenure, abortion numbers have consistently increased and adoption referrals have regularly decreased, resulting in the dismal 138:1 statistic.
- Even after 18-year-old Planned Parenthood customer Holly Patterson was killed by complications from an RU-486 abortion, the organization sold the dangerous abortion pill more than 95,000 times at 203 of its offices, including 49 facilities that began selling the pill in the last year even though they do not perform surgical abortions.
- Following an aggressive marketing campaign, Planned Parenthood increased its distribution of the morning-after pill by 22.2 percent to 774,482. A Planned Parenthood web site confirms the drug can cause the death of a newly formed human by "changing the lining of the uterus so that a fertilized egg [sic] could not implant in the uterus."
- While Planned Parenthood worked to increase its numbers of surgical and chemical abortions, breast exams at its facilities dropped by 13.3 percent.
- The number of clinics operated by Planned Parenthood continued to decline, from 866 clinics to 849 clinics in the last year. Since Planned Parenthood's heyday in 1995 when the organization operated 938 offices, the organization now has shut down a net 89 of its clinics, suggesting that the public is increasingly steering away from Planned Parenthood offices.
- Private financial support of Planned Parenthood continued to erode as contributions and bequests dropped 17 percent to $191 million, and the income of its national headquarters dropped by 19.8 percent.
- By increasing abortion numbers, raising clinic prices, and persuading politicians to give it a record $265.2 million in taxpayer funding, Planned Parenthood was able to post its 18th straight year of record total income ($810 million), and ended the year with a stockpile of $725.3 million in assets.
- For the 18th year in a row, Planned Parenthood turned a net profit. This year's $35.2 million brings its total profits over the 18-year period to $538 million.
Sedlak added, "This report shows the public is increasingly rejecting Planned Parenthood's radical agenda, but apparently our elected officials haven't gotten the message. Now is the time for Americans to expand the growing efforts to close Planned Parenthood clinics and to put pressure on politicians to stop the obscene amount of taxpayer money that is being funneled to the nation's largest abortion chain."
New Planned Parenthood facilities
Since the last Ryan Report, we received word that the following new PP facility has opened. If you are aware of any others newly opened, please let us know. We encourage pro-lifers to actively oppose all Planned Parenthood facilities, wherever they are.
- Planned Parenthood of Alabama has opened a new clinic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The clinic is located at 6111 U.S. 49, Suite 116. Several years ago, Planned Parenthood was forced to close down all its operations in Mississippi due to strong opposition from Christian pastors. This new office is being run by PP of Alabama, an organization that also runs an abortion facility in Birmingham, Alabama.

We present here each month links to recent stories about Planned Parenthood. (Note that many newspapers move web pages. The links below were working at time this report was initially sent.)
Planned Parenthood Sued in Charlottesville, Virginia
Pro-lifers in Albermale County (Charlottesville), Virginia, are doing everything they can to close down the Planned Parenthood facility that is doing abortions. Pro-lifers maintain that the facility is, in fact, a hospital, but that the current zoning is for professional offices. Pro-lifers base their assertion, in part, on the fact that blueprints of the building now refer to the building's elevator as a "hospital elevator" and a newsletter that refers to the Hydraulic Road building as a hospital.
Local resident Renae Townsend and five residents of the nearby Garden Court townhouses have filed a lawsuit against the county's board of supervisors and Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge. In it, the residents ask for the revocation of the special-use permit supervisors granted for a professional office building. We ask all STOPP supporters to pray for the success of this effort.
Merry Christmas
The staff at American Life League wishes all of you a very merry Christmas. As we finish STOPP's 20th year in the fight against Planned Parenthood, we're encouraged by the growing number of troops nationwide. Every one of you makes a difference. We wish you a peaceful time celebrating the birth of our Savior. May this season draw you ever closer to Jesus - who wants us to be with Him forever in Heaven.
Praise God!!
