New Bishop of Rockville Center leads 350 in prayer to PP clinic
On November 10, 2001, Bishop William Murphy, the new bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, led 350 Catholics and other pro-lifers in a march from Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where he offered an early morning Mass, to the Planned Parenthood clinic on Carmans Road in Massapequa Park. The protesters prayed and sang hymns outside the clinic for about 20 minutes.
|
"What happened September 11 makes this an even more appropriate time to pray," Bishop Murphy said.
"We're trying to witness in respect for human life, including the lives of the unborn." Bishop Murphy said he plans to continue the diocese's tradition of holding prayer vigils at abortion clinics, and he will lead them several times a year (Newsday, 11/11/01).
|
|
The executive director of Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, Karen Pearl, reacted by saying it is inappropriate to be protesting in a time of war. She said one effect of the protest would be that women who are going to the clinic would be driven away. (Editor: Great!)
At the Mass Bishop Murphy said of the unborn, "They are the innocent ones. They are the ones who have no one else to defend them" (The Long Island Catholic, 11/14/01). He urged prayers for mothers and for those who are considering abortion and those who perform abortions.
Following the Mass, most of the congregation joined Bishop Murphy in a procession from the church to the clinic. Many children joined the procession as well, and some participants were pushed in wheelchairs.
As they processed, they prayed the Glorious and Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary and the Sorrowful Mysteries as they neared the clinic. About ten clinic escorts watched as Bishop Murphy and his followers prayed.
PP of Nassau's Massapequa Park Center does not perform surgical abortions, but its clinic in Hempstead does. The Massapequa Park clinic is the site of weekly protests. The Life Center of Long Island (www.lifecenterli.org) is set to open a pro-life medical office right across the street from the PP clinic. This will be a crisis pregnancy center that includes a sonogram. Lorraine Gariboldi, president of the Life Center, said, "We're looking forward to opening a new life center across the street from Planned Parenthood. We hope to open in the spring and have Bishop Murphy come to bless it" (ibid).
STOPP congratulates Bishop Murphy for his strong support of the pro-life cause and his visible witness and leadership against the evil of Planned Parenthood. STOPP supporters are urged to write a note of thanks to Most Reverend William F. Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, 50 N. Park Avenue, Rockville Center, NY 11570.
Praying for 'a new respect for life'

Wisconsin Rapids - On Oct. 7, 1571, a naval force of about 206 Christian ships engaged in battle with a slightly larger number of Turkish ships at the port city of Lepanto, Italy. At the same time, Rosary processions throughout Rome seemed to tip the balance in favor of the Christians. The Turks lost the Battle of Lepanto by an overwhelming margin.
|
Exactly 430 years later, on the Feast of the Holy Rosary and the anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto, Christians took to their beads to rid the world of an evil menace.
This time, though, the prayer for victory was not to rout an enemy in a territorial war.
|
|
Rather, for the almost 250 people gathered in here, the prayer for victory is against that more encompassing and destructive enemy of humanity, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).
Organized by the newly formed Servants of Our Lady of Guadalupe and led by Bishop Raymond L. Burke, the prayer vigil coincided with "Respect Life Sunday," a national day of prayer recognizing the sacredness of all human life. "We wish to fight hatred with charity, not with destructive force, but charity," Servant Patricia McKenna said, stressing the peaceful character of the day's event. "We wish to fight error with truth. We wish to fight death with a life of sacrifice."
The event began with a gathering at Assumption High School and moved to the PP clinic in downtown Wisconsin Rapids, where, according to the Servants, although no surgical abortion is performed, chemical abortions through contraceptives are administered.
At the pre-vigil gathering, after the Servants of Our Lady of Guadalupe introduced Bishop Burke, thanking him for coming to the vigil, the Servants' chaplain, Father Samuel Martin, chaplain of Assumption, offered a prayer for the venture.
Servant Suzanne Abdalla then explained the nefarious purpose of PP and why it was essential that this company be shut down as soon as possible. "I want to begin this brief talk by saying one word - eugenics," Abdalla said. "Eugenics is a very simple philosophy, but it is also very wicked. Eugenics literally means 'good genes,' and those who hold this philosophy think that intelligence is the key human quality...
"PP believes that they will achieve peace on earth through a selection of more smart people and fewer dumb people."
Through public sex education, their abortion clinics, political and financial support of abortion rights advocates, population-control programs and highly influential involvement in the United Nations, according to Abdalla, Planned Parenthood has been immensely successful in spreading its agenda of death and destruction, not only around the country but around the world, believing that it is their duty to rid the earth of unwanted births, including minority, economically impoverished and physically and mentally handicapped babies.
But a key target, Abdalla added, is the traditional Catholic family. "This is why PP, year after year, goes on to lie through its teeth about the overpopulation," Abdalla explained. "There is no overpopulation problem. But for PP, as long as you have a large Catholic family, you have an overpopulation problem. The large Catholic family itself is a problem which PP would love to have removed. Until we understand this aspect of PP's agenda, we are going to have a hard time fighting against them."
Abdalla claimed that three myths about PP contribute to its continued acceptance in American society. "PP is not feminist," Abdalla said. "If it truly cared about women, it would not force women around the world to procure birth control and abortions."
In addition, Abdalla added, PP was neither altruistic in its motives nor intent on reducing unwanted pregnancies. "If that were the case," Abdalla said, "they would not have made almost $65 million, last year alone, by surgically killing preborn children, and another $85 million by selling birth control, some of which is really abortifacient. That's 15 percent of the U.S.'s total procured abortions in 1999."
Calling attention to the importance of prayer in the fight for the unborn, Servant Will Goodman then reminded the participants that the Rosary is one of the most powerful and effective means of ending the reign of terror which PP has held over the unborn.
At the prayer vigil itself, Bishop Burke led the crowd of priests, nuns and laity in the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. Afterwards, Bishop Burke commended all who came to "pray at this place which represents the culture of death, the culture which we are called to overcome through our prayer and fasting."
He concluded by offering a reflection to those present, pointing to the precedence which the power of prayer finds in the Gospel. "We recall when the disciples went out," Bishop Burke noted. "upon their return they complained to our Lord about the difficulty of casting out certain demons. He told them that these can only be cast out through prayer and fasting.
"So, too, as we face this great evil of the attack on human life in our culture, an attack which has made truly our culture one of death, it is only through prayer and fasting and through our turning to God, our only refuge and strength, that we will overcome death and will bring the light which Christ intends for all to our world.
"The Rosary which we have prayed here today is one of the most powerful prayers which our Lord has given to us in the Church, a prayer which is available to us at all times... So I would urge you that you make this prayer a daily prayer, a prayer for the return in our society of a respect for all human life made in God's own image and likeness and redeemed by the most precious Blood of His only begotten Son.
"God bless all of you for coming here today and praying. Let us continue our prayers that God will favor us and our nation and return to our nation, through His grace, a new respect for life."
STOPP congratulates Bishop Burke and the Servants of Our Lady of Guadalupe for organizing and leading this witness against Planned Parenthood. STOPP supporters are urged to write a note of thanks to the Most Reverend Raymond L. Burke, Bishop of La Crosse, P.O. Box 4004, La Crosse, WI 54602-4004.
Bishops speak on contraception and abortion in new document
Perhaps you noticed that in both of the previous stories the bishops were leading the Rosary at Planned Parenthood clinics that do not perform surgical abortions but that do provide contraceptives, many of which act as abortifacients. STOPP has always advocated peaceful prayerful protests at all PP clinics, even if they don't provide surgical abortion. The U.S. bishops recently released a new pro-life document which, in part, addresses the issue of contraception and how it relates to abortion.
The following two paragraphs are excerpted from Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities: A Campaign in Support of Life. (Copyright 2001, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Inc., Washington, D.C. All rights reserved.) The November 27, 2001, document is posted in full on the web.
It is noteworthy that as acceptance and use of contraception have increased in our society, so have acceptance and use of abortion. Couples who unintentionally conceive a child while using contraception are far more likely to resort to abortion than others. Tragically, our society has fallen into a mentality that views children as a burden and invites many to consider abortion as a "backup" to contraceptive failure. This is most obvious in efforts to promote as "emergency contraception" drugs that really act as early abortifacients.
With Pope John Paul II we affirm that contraception and abortion are "specifically different evils," because only "the latter destroys the life of a human being," but that they are also related (The Gospel of Life, no. 13). It is important to remember that means referred to as "contraceptive" are, in reality, sometimes also abortifacient. An end to abortion will not come from contraceptive campaigns but from a deeper understanding of our human sexuality, and of human life, as sacred gifts deserving our careful stewardship.
Statements from other bishops against Planned Parenthood
Through the years, a number of Catholic bishops have made specific statements concerning the organization Planned Parenthood. Presented below are some of those statements. If you are aware other such statements from religious leaders of any faith, please forward them to us at STOPP. After verification and permission, we will post them on STOPP's web site. We have included the addresses of all those living with the hope that readers will contact them to express thanks. We recommend that you ask the late Cardinal O'Connor to intercede for the pro-life movement.
Planned Parenthood has a history of distorting the truth. On October 3, 1980, it ran an advertisement in the New York Times with the headline: "There Is A Group That Would Sooner See You Dead Than Allow You An Abortion." Another Times ad on October 5, 1980, was headlined: "There Is A Group That Would Force You To Bear Your Rapist's Child." And, on January 5 [1995] Planned Parenthood ran a full-page ad in the Times insinuating that pro-life people are terrorists and provocateurs. These claims are, of course, nonsense.
In addition to lies about pro-lifers, Planned Parenthood also distorts the truth about itself. It claims to be "pro-choice" while fighting against informed consent legislation that would ensure women are told the truth about abortion. I find it difficult to take any Planned Parenthood claim seriously.

The faithful are prohibited from maintaining membership in any condemned, prohibited or disapproved societies or organizations. These include ... Planned Parenthood ... Any members of the Diocese of Lincoln who retain membership in [Planned Parenthood] after having learned of [its] forbidden nature, are bound by an automatic interdict after the passage of one month. If after the passage of a second month, they have likewise failed to dissociate themselves from membership, they are bound by an automatic excommunication. This means they may not participate in the sacramental life of the Church, and, if their membership is public and well known, then other ecclesiastical rites may likewise be denied to them.

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America is the largest promoter of abortion in the United States. Through their extensive sex education programs and their teen website, teenwire.com, PPFA targets youth and young adults, educating them that any and all forms of sexual expression are not only valid but encouraged.
Not only is Planned Parenthood responsible for countless abortions, leaving so many women hurting after the loss of their children, the organization is largely responsible for our culture's disintegrating respect for traditional marriage in exchange for "partnerships" and "sexual self-expression." The goals of Planned Parenthood are made painfully clear in the statement of Gloria Feldt, as quoted in the Washington Times, January 22, 1997, "Reproductive choices (including abortion) are not just legal rights but are recognized as moral necessities without which there can be no liberty."

As your bishop and shepherd, I ask all Catholics not to use Planned Parenthood's services, not to belong to any of their boards, not to serve as a volunteer and not to be employed there. In resigning your employment there, I will be happy to assist you in finding employment elsewhere so you will not be cooperating in these immoral practices and being a source of scandal both within and outside the Church and community. I make this plea, in love, as my duty to continue the mission of Jesus Christ: to teach, to sanctify and to govern.

In 1991, as bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota, I had personal experience with Planned Parenthood seeking to intrude itself into western South Dakota. I spoke at a STOPP national convention in Rapid City. In my talk, I noted that Planned Parenthood is not a friend of the family ... It is a pro-abortion organization with a set of values vastly different from the values of Jesus Christ. I would certainly reaffirm that conviction today.
Planned Parenthood is an organization based on falsehoods about the human person, the family and community life. Planned Parenthood calls itself pro-child. When a minor comes to Planned Parenthood, she is provided information on contraception and abortion without parental notification. A minor is given materials on sexuality with an implicit message that fertility is a disease and pregnancy is to be attacked. Planned Parenthood opposes any restriction on abortion of the unborn child through nine months of pregnancy. Planned Parenthood opposes a partial birth abortion ban. In light of this, how can Planned Parenthood justify calling itself pro-child?
Planned Parenthood calls itself pro-woman. Yet Planned Parenthood vigorously opposes any legislation to provide advanced medical information pertaining to an abortion procedure. Planned Parenthood vigorously opposes any legislation to provide a woman seeking an abortion knowledge of her unborn child's development. Planned Parenthood vigorously opposes any legislation to require a 24-hour waiting period before a woman has an abortion. How can Planned Parenthood justify keeping vital information on abortion away from a woman and yet call itself pro-woman? How can an organization which helps to facilitate the killing of unborn children in huge numbers call itself pro-woman?
Planned Parenthood calls itself pro-family. Yet it simultaneously provides counsel for contraception and abortion under the guise of "freedom of choice." The two questions to ask are: "choice for what and choice for whom?" Planned Parenthood vigorously opposes any law that would inform parents before a minor child receives contraception or an abortion. How can Planned Parenthood justify calling itself pro-family when it intrudes itself between a child and parent?
I would urge any community today, as I did in 1991, to defend itself against Planned Parenthood by every legal and ethical means at its disposal.

Planned Parenthood's record over the years leaves no room for any doubt whatsoever regarding its ideological stance on human life and family issues. It is a stance diametrically opposed to Christian truth regarding the sanctity of each human life from the moment of conception onward, the unbreakable God-given bond between the unitive and procreative purposes of sexual activity, and the unique role of monogamous, heterosexual marriage as the only legitimate context of genital expression.
More than any other single organized group today, Planned Parenthood International represents the hedonism and moral relativism which are fueling that "culture of death" which Pope John Paul II has warned against and denounced throughout his pontificate. I warmly endorse and support the efforts of STOPP to counteract the influence and activity of this evil organization.

I wish to commend and encourage STOPP International for all that you do to promote the dignity of every human person, made in the image and likeness of God. I am also grateful for your efforts in promoting respect for marriage and a greater awareness of our destiny with God and each other in life eternal. These teachings on the value and dignity of human life and marriage are deeply rooted in the Scriptures and our Judaic-Christian tradition. You provide a great service to society in exposing the truth about the philosophy and practices of Planned Parenthood. In its promotion of abortions and artificial contraceptives, it is rejecting the culture of light and life and leading society down a path of darkness and death.
May God bless your work advocating respect for God-given life from conception until natural death and in encouraging people in our society to be open to God's plan in the transmission and respect for our greatest natural gift: life itself.

Despite public media, which for the most part support abortion as the right of women over their own bodies without any concern for the rights of their pre-born babies, despite massive opposition from a multimillion dollar abortion industry that has Planned Parenthood as a front, despite Supreme Court decisions which continue to leave pre-born and partially-born babies vulnerable to painful deaths, we Catholics must not cease our efforts to declare abortion a moral blight and a national scandal. We must not cease our efforts to confront the evil of abortion in our cities and neighborhoods.

"We're not proceeding, because of the contractor's involvement with Planned Parenthood," said Monsignor Henry J. Gugino, head of housing development for the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, New York. The comment was made as the diocese, at the direction of its bishop, halted construction on a $4.6 million dollar home for seniors in Wheatfield, N.Y., when it found out the contractor was also building offices for Planned Parenthood. Bishop Henry J. Mansell's spokesman, Monsignor David M. Lee, said the bishop and other diocesan officials decided to put the project on hold because of "moral concerns."

In my work as an auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I am particularly charged with the archdiocese's outreach to other Christians and to members of other religious faiths. Some of the differences within the religious family are not completely surprising, but I find particularly sad the division over the need to uphold the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. In addition, it is very painful to discover that self-professed men and women of faith sit on Planned Parenthood boards or raise funds for Planned Parenthood's assault on God's plan for humanity. In my ecumenical and interreligious work, the division among religious people over something as seemingly self-evident as the sanctity of life often makes it hard to motivate Catholics to imitate Pope John Paul II's brilliant efforts to fulfill Jesus' prayer: "That all may be one" (John 17).

It is wonderful to see so many of you gathered here today as a visible statement of how we in St. Cloud feel about Planned Parenthood opening a clinic in our midst. If you saw the articles in the St. Cloud Visitor and St. Cloud Times, you are aware of my displeasure over this clinic.
One of the basic principles of the Catholic Church is the sacredness of human life. We cannot sit still when there is even a hint of destruction of that life.
When Pope John Paul II visited the United States and spoke to the youth in Denver, he challenged them with the following: "America, you must come out of your comfortable lifestyles now and you must come out into the streets and into the public places and you must shout the Gospel of Life from the rooftop. Do not be afraid. Jesus Christ is with you."
I echo that simple message of the Pope's here today. We must come out into the streets, as you are doing this evening, and we must be a voice for those who have no voice. You are that voice. I hope you will continue to be that voice and will spread your message to others in our community. I firmly believe that St. Cloud is a community that strongly supports the dignity of life at all stages, but we must always do so peacefully and non-violently.
We cannot be afraid to make our voices heard. We cannot be afraid to shout the Gospel of Life. Thank you for all you are doing. God bless you.

I am saddened to learn that Planned Parenthood is attempting to open an office in Houghton. This is bad news because the anti-life values promoted by this organization will harm the youth and families of the western Upper Peninsula.
The support for abortion, contraception and sexual expressions outside of marriage contributes to a society that is dangerous to children...
A culture of death permeates our society. It is the result of the promotion of values opposed to life, values that choose abortion as a good. This dangerous environment for children results from a contraceptive mentality that separates sexual pleasure from procreation and chooses convenience or material gain over a self-sacrificing love for the child of one's womb who can be the joy of one's life.
What is more unnatural and evil than a mother killing the baby of her womb? When people seek to eliminate or remove children from their lives they are confusing evil with what is actually good.
It was not very long ago that all Christian churches considered contraception immoral and beneath the dignity of the human person...
The Catholic Church continues to hold that reason rightly understands that marriage should be open to children while contraception is beneath the dignity of the human person and abortion an assault on innocent human life in the womb.
Planned Parenthood's philosophy and actions are contrary to the law of nature and the consistent Catholic teaching about the sanctity of life. God who creates life alone has dominion over human life. The freedom of choice Planned Parenthood promotes is a choice to kill an innocent baby.
The freedom of human reproduction it espouses is largely responsible for the disintegration of respect for traditional marriage. In its place we see "partnerships" and "sexual self-expression" with an aftermath of children, who are denied the nurture of a two-parent family.
Planned Parenthood proclaims a view of human life and sexuality that flies in the face of the law God has written in our hearts and in the face of Jesus' teaching in the Gospel.
For the future good of our children and families, I hope that people in the Houghton community will defend themselves against Planned Parenthood's philosophy and values by every legal and ethical means at their disposal.

COPP invites STOPP to Wisconsin
On October 18, STOPP's national director, Ed Szymkowiak, traveled to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, upon the invitation of Ann Fontecchio who heads a newly formed group in an area called Citizens Opposed to Planned Parenthood (COPP).
| Ann was motivated to contact STOPP by an article in the local paper which focused upon the director of the Fond du Lac PP clinic who indicated she wanted to gain greater access to teens in the local schools.
On October 19, Ann drove Ed to Appleton, Wisconsin, for a half hour radio talk show with Patti Ulrich of Christian Family Radio. Then Ann showed Ed the PP abortion clinic in Appleton where she and other pro-lifers regularly picket and pray.

The house next to this clinic is occupied by a pro-lifer who has placed two large signs in the home's backyard on billboards facing the PP parking lot and another large sign on the front yard. Planned Parenthood has erected a high fence around its property in an attempt to block out the pro-life message, but the pro-life billboards are higher than the fence and pro-lifers have placed a step ladder on their side so someone can talk to PP clients over the fence!

Next, it was back to Fond du Lac and to the Winnebago Lutheran Academy, where Ed addressed about 400 high school students. He spoke about Planned Parenthood's finances and how Planned Parenthood targets youth for profit. Ed told the students about Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, and her ugly eugenics philosophy. Also covered were the abortifacient effects of common contraceptive drugs and devices and the increased risk of breast cancer a woman faces when she uses birth control drugs or has an abortion. Immediately after this presentation, the principal asked Ed to address a meeting of Lutheran women in progress in the cafeteria. Here Ed summarized what he spoke about to the students a few minutes before.
The next day, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Grace Reformed Church in Fond du Lac, Ed gave a series of four talks at an event entitled, "Planned Parenthood...it's not what you think." The event was co-sponsored by COPP, the Fond du Lac Knights of Columbus Council 664, Pro-Life Wisconsin, and the Fond du Lac chapter of Wisconsin Right to Life. The talks covered the following material: Margaret Sanger's influence on Planned Parenthood, Planned Parenthood's master plan - sex education to contraception to abortion, Planned Parenthood sex education programs, and Planned Parenthood's agenda for 2010.
