A summary and analysis of Planned Parenthood's operations in the United States – 1999-2000

Planned Parenthood's own statistics tell the story:
Planned Parenthood = Abortion

Summary: Planned Parenthood tells anyone that will listen, "abortion is only a small part of what we do." Yet, its statistics tell a completely different story. Here is what Planned Parenthood's own data reveals:

  • As the chart below shows, the number of surgical abortions at Planned Parenthood jumped 8.5% last year to a total of 182,854. With this record year of killing babies, the number of abortions performed under the leadership of Gloria Feldt has jumped 37.2% since 1995 (the last full year of her predecessor).

  • In addition to the absolute number increases, Planned Parenthood now charges more for each abortion. The average price for a first trimester abortion at PP is $350. As the next chart shows, Planned Parenthood took in a record $64 Million last year from its surgical abortion business. This represents 29% of its total clinic income. Hardly an insignificant "service" as PP claims.

  • In 1995, Planned Parenthood embarked on a campaign to do as many surgical abortions as possible itself and to end abortion referrals to other providers. The next chart shows the numbers as they relate to PP's abortion business. The number of referrals to other abortionists has fallen so low that PP did not even report the number in its latest Annual Report. Instead, PP has begun contracting its abortion services to other agencies and is now reporting a new category.

  • Planned Parenthood performs almost 15% of all surgical abortions in the United States.

It's corporate money

STOPP has been collecting detailed information on the operations of Planned Parenthood for over 16 years. Each year we bring you the highlights of PP's operations in this annual summary.

Over the years, there have been a number of trends we have been able to report on as we analyze the PP data. Certainly the intentional growth of PP's abortion business is one of those trends. But, another trends that is just a revealing and just as important is the clear connection between corporate donations to PP and its abortion business.

Presented below is the most current chart, based on the most up-to-date information. The correlation between corporate giving and PP's abortion business is just too clear to be ignored. Just look at the data. For the last 10 years, the relationship is there for all who care to observe it. The more money PP gets from corporations, foundations and individuals, the more babies it kills through abortion.

There are two good groups that track the corporate donors to PP - Life Decisions International and the St. Antoninus Institute.

STOPP encourages all those concerned about the killing business at Planned Parenthood to get involved with trying to end the corporate giving to the organization.

Use the chart, and information provided by the groups focusing on corporations funding abortion to educate the business leaders on the true effects of their gifts. Show them the data. If they are truly businessmen, they will see the connection.

PPFA national headquarters

In addition to the data on PP's operations throughout the United States, we thought it would be informative to look at the financial operations of PP's national headquarters.

The headquarters of Planned Parenthood Federation of America is located at 810 Seventh Avenue in New York City (10019). Its phone number is 212-541-7800.

As the chart below shows, the income of the national office, which operates no clinics and provides no services to the public, has increased dramatically since Gloria Feldt became president in 1996.

According to its latest IRS data, the income of the national office is $57,208,344. Of the $57 million, approximately $5 million comes from "membership fees" paid by the general public to become members of PPFA. An additional $9 million comes from merchandise sold or receipts at events, etc. About $830,000 is from interest on its investments, $380,000 from the American taxpayer, and the bulk is from gifts of individuals, corporations and foundations.

According to PP, $2,541,137 comes from fees it charges its affiliates. What that means is that every PPFA affiliate across the country pays part of its income to the national office. PP claims the fee is for "providing conference training sessions and other educational and technical assistance to Planned Parenthood affiliates." STOPP has determined that the fee is normally about 1% of the affiliates total income. PP says it has 127 affiliates, so it receives an average of about $20,000 from each one. Remember that the next time your local affiliate claims to be an "independent" operation.

Now, the PPFA national office does conduct advocacy campaigns and coordinates the work of its 127 affiliates that do run the clinics. PPFA also pays salaries, benefits, and provides an expense account to its corporate officers. To give you an example, here is the total of all these items paid to its top five employees:

Gloria Feldt
President
$301,754

R. James Lefevre, Jr.
Chief strategic officer
$221,499

James Minow
VP development
$183,575

Michael Burnhill
Medical Director (part time)
$165,376

Jeffrey Mechanick
VP Business services
$146,312

In addition to the above individuals, 90 people who work at PPFA's national headquarters make over $50,000 per year.

As with other parts of Planned Parenthood, the national office operates at a profit. The next charts show overall PP profits.

Planned Parenthood claims to be a not-for-profit organization. Yet, every year, it records an "income in excess of expenditure in the millions of dollars.

Taxpayer funding

In light of the enormous profits made by Planned Parenthood and its high salaries, the following charts, which show how much taxpayer money PP receives, should move everyone to action.

And, remember, while collecting all this money from us, Planned Parenthood has been killing babies in the womb at an ever increasing pace.

PP sets record in sex education spending

For the first time in its history, Planned Parenthood spent more than $30 Million in a single year on sex education programs.

Despite this record spending, for the third year in a row, Planned Parenthood has not been able to increase the number of attendees at its sex education programs (see chart below). This is significant for PP, because the long-term viability of the organization relies on sex education programs providing it new customers.

As we have discussed in many previous publications, it is the sex education programs run by Planned Parenthood that historically spur its business growth and its abortions. Without a viable sex education program, PP knows that it is only a matter of time before its empire begins to collapse.

The chart below tells the story of a PP organization continually spending more and more on sex education, with nothing but decreased attendance to show for its efforts.

PP obviously hopes that an infusion of cash in this business will produce results in coming years. In 1994, the last year they tried such a strategy, they did see a momentary increase in attendees, but it was followed by several years of decline. Now they are going to try it again.

Those who find PP's programs objectionable should renew their efforts to put a halt to PP's access to our children. It is only through keeping PP away from our children and away from our money that we will eventually defeat the organization.

Adoption referrals decline

A number of areas of PP's business declined over the last year. Planned Parenthood's adoption referrals to other agencies declined significantly. In 1998 there were 4,892 and in 1999 there were 2,999. That's a 39 percent decrease! Furthermore, when one compares the numbers of abortions PP performs with the number of adoption referrals PP makes, one can readily see that such referrals are a relatively miniscule part of PP's business. In 1999, for every one adoption referral PP made, it aborted about 61 babies (divide 182,854 by 2,999)!

Primary care declines

Primary care clients decreased 26.3 percent from 27,320 in 1998 to 20,136 in 1999. This is well below the 24,064 PP reported in 1997, the first year they started to track such clients. Ryan Report readers may remember that a few years ago PP announced a major effort to get into the primary care business. This year's report certainly indicates that that project has suffered a significant setback. It seems that true health care is not a forte for this death dealing organization.
