Just when you think you've plumbed the depths of Planned Parenthood's depravity, it digs the pit a little deeper. Planned Parenthood's latest disgusting affront comes, as it often does from PP, in the form of something designed to pervert innocent children.
|
The picture here shows what appears to be two lollipops, but what are, in fact, two brightly colored condoms.
These rolled condoms are packaged in clear wrappers, which have the familiar and friendly smiley face image on the front and the world wide web address for Planned Parenthood's teenwire.com website on the back.
|
Each package has been glued to a typical lollipop stick, which is wrapped with a pretty colored ribbon. STOPP has obtained two versions of the "lollipop," one red and the other yellow.
Obviously PP is aiming this gimmick at kids. That's why the teenwire.com web address is on the back. This device can serve several purposes for Planned Parenthood. It advertises the teenwire.com website and lures kids into visiting and absorbing the perversion therein. It serves as a humorous means of breaking down natural inhibitions and can easily be handed out at clinics, schools, fairs, etc. From a distance of just a couple of feet it is difficult to even notice that it is not a lollipop, thus it could easily find its way into distribution sites where a normally-packaged condom would not be allowed. It's sure to be a darling of the "safer-sex" crowd as well. Finally, many will, of course, be used during illicit sex acts.
Even very young children are sure to be attracted to this deplorably deceptive "lollipop." They would probably end up putting this thing in their mouths before they realize that it is not candy. This then sets the stage for a Planned Parenthood "teaching moment." Children will ask questions and older siblings, teachers, or parents will then be forced to explain things to these youngsters that they really do not need to know, with the outcome being a lessening of the natural period of childhood innocence.
Planned Parenthood chose to disseminate these despicable condom pops at
its display at the high-profile American Public Health Association conference that was held in Boston on Nov. 12-15. STOPP's parent organization, American Life League, sent a representative to this conference, and it was this representative who obtained the condom pops from PP.
ALL had the only pro-life exhibit booth among some 500 others. Needless to say, many of the thousands of participants in this conference, from all over the country, probably thought the condom pop was a great idea. These public health workers have the potential to introduce the lollipop all over the U.S. STOPP supporters are urged, therefore, to be on guard for the condom pops not only where Planned Parenthood is present, but also anywhere in the public health arena.
Gates gives IPPF $8.8 million
The London-based International Planned Parenthood Federation announced on Dec. 11 that it had received an $8.8 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to be spread out over five years.
This is blood money. IPPF is the world leader in promoting surgical abortion and abortion-causing drugs. Gates' money will be used by an organization that bears responsibility for the killing of countless innocent children worldwide. Gates' donation is not philanthropy, but fuel for the IPPF death machine.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's 1999 annual report lists five grants to Planned Parenthood or its research arm, the Alan Guttmacher Institute, totaling $12,253,990. In addition, the report shows that the foundation has given millions more to other population elimination organizations and programs.
Gates' habit of funding population elimination programs is shortsighted as well. Many countries are reporting below-replacement birth rates that are setting the stage for serious social and economic problems in the not-so-distant future. Singapore, for example, is now paying parents to have more children in an effort to stave off the looming economic damage that will be caused by its shrinking population (BBC News, 8/21/00).
Those countries that still do have healthy birth rates also tend to be counties of color. Population control programs, such as those funded by Gates, smack of racism when they target such countries. We should not be punishing people who have the good common sense to have large families. Children are our future, and Gates should give his money to organizations that benefit children, not kill them via surgical and drug-induced abortion.
STOPP spoke with Rev. Johnny Hunter about the Gates gift. Hunter, a black pro-life activist, says he is an opponent of Gates' "misguided 'generosity.'" Hunter says "abortion is racism in its ugliest form. Because of some very suave planning by abortion supporters and providers, abortionists have eliminated more African American children than the KKK ever lynched."
STOPP urges supporters to visit American Life League's special web site devoted to educating Bill Gates about world population.
Congress ups Title X funding
On Dec. 15, the Republican-controlled Congress increased 2001 Title X funding to $253.9 million (up from $238.9 million in 2000). Since Planned Parent-hood generally gets about 20 percent of the total Title X funds, this $15 million increase will translate into about $3 million more for Planned Parenthood, bringing its total Title X haul for next year to well over $50 million. Given that PP had just spent at least $7 million to elect Al Gore, you would have thought the Republican Congress would have had the good sense not to reward PP with more money!
PP seeking over-the-counter use of morning-after pill
Planned Parenthood Federation of America's president and arch-promoter of abortion, Gloria Feldt, has distorted the definition of abortion in order to justify her desire to have the American Medical Association and the FDA approve the over-the-counter use of the "morning-after pill" (Preven, Plan B).
Using a flawed redefinition of abortion as something that only occurs between implantation and birth, Feldt is misleading people with her claim that the morning-after pill will prevent 800,000 abortions a year (Associated Press, 12/1/00).
The truth is that life begins at conception, and about 5 to 7 days later the new human being implants himself in his mother's womb. The morning-after pill can prevent implantation, thus aborting new life. Such pills are "effective" when taken within 3 days of intercourse.
The morning-after pill, also known as "emergency contraception," demonstrates the close connection that exists, in mentality, between the practice of contraception and abortion. They are fruits of the same tree, and they reflect a self-centered concept of freedom which regards the life that could result from a sexual encounter as an enemy to be avoided at all costs.
Sadly, the American Medical Aberration granted one of Feldt's wishes when it voted in early December to endorse the over-the-counter use of the morning-after pill without a doctor's prescription. The next stop is the FDA, which will most likely cave in on the matter as well.
Morning-after pills are characterized by dramatically higher doses of hormones that are associated with the health risks caused by the pre-1975 birth control pills (e.g. stroke, blood clots). There is no way to predict how many times a woman might decide to use the morning-after pill in one cycle. If she is very sexually active, she may be getting far more of the hormone in her system during a month then she would have gotten had she been on the pre-1975 pills.
If the FDA approves the over-the-counter sale of morning-after pills without a prescription, there would be no medical supervision of a woman who might be using the pills so often as to put herself at risk for the very same problems that were caused by the early high-dose pills. This will be especially dangerous for highly sexually active teenage girls.
Woman in coma after surgery at Planned Parenthood
On Nov. 2, Linda McCown slipped into a coma following tubal ligation surgery at a Planned Parenthood facility in Overland Park, Kansas. Linda McCown is a 27-year-old mother of four from Sedalia, Missouri. STOPP has had several conversations with members of Linda's family. As of Dec. 5, Linda's mother said Linda was still in a coma.
KMBC-TV news had reported on Nov. 6 that the family was told that Linda went without oxygen for a period of time during this operation. STOPP asked Linda's sister, Shannon, about this and was told that the speculationis that the oxygen tube that wassupposed to be bringing oxygen to Linda's lungs was placed in her stomach instead.
Later, STOPP consulted a medical doctor on what would be the most probable scenario in a case such as this. This doctor said that it was most likely that the anesthesiologist placed the oxygen tube down the esophagus rather than the trachea. In such a case, the anesthesiologist would bear primary responsibility.
Shannon identified the doctor who performed the tubal ligation as Robert Crist, but she did not identify the anesthesiologist. She did say that the family would be taking legal action.
Dr. Crist also happens to be Planned Parenthood's chief abortionist at the Forest Park Street abortuary in St. Louis. In last month's issue of the Ryan Report we told you about the gruesome testimony Crist gave during a May 2000 trial in St. Louis in which Planned Parenthood was challenging the legality of the partial-birth infanticide law in Missouri.
Malpractice at Planned Parenthood is nothing new. It is well documented in a 1997 book, The Scarlet Survey, by journalist Kevin Sherlock, published by Brennyman Books. Lawsuits filed against Planned Parenthood facilities across the country include medical malpractice, violations of health codes, medical record and patient care deficiencies, unsanitary conditions, altered lab reports, fraudulent billing, equipment and utility deficiencies, sex offenses, and so on. This book also documents some of the lawsuits filed against Dr. Crist, including one involving the death of a 19-year-old retarded girl, Diane Boyd, following an abortion in 1981.
STOPP supporters can use what happened to Linda McCown and the material in The Scarlet Survey to help women realize the kind of people Planned Parenthood employs to do surgery, and to urge women to think twice about going to Planned Parenthood for any type of health care. The Scarlet Survey can be ordered from Borders.com.
Please keep Linda McCown and her family in your prayers. Pray also for Dr. Crist. Those in the St. Louis area can join a monthly rosary walk to the Planned Parenthood clinic at Forest Park and Boyle, where Crist plies his grisly abortion business. This 15-decade rosary walk is held on the third Saturday of every month, following an 8 am Mass at the Cathedral Basilica. There is benediction at the Cathedral after the walk.
PP supporter maligns priest as 'Nazi'
Last spring, Robin Moody, then asenior and president of the women's studies club at Gonzaga University, a Catholic institution, tried to bringa PP representative to speak on campus. Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ, the university president, blocked this effort.
In November, Moody abused herposition as a copy editor for the Spokane Spokesman Review by writing the libelous headline, "Nazi priest promotes his book," which ran in the paper on Nov. 8.
Moody had placed the headline on an article about a book signing for Fr. Spitzer's book, Healing the Culture: A Commonsense Philosophy of Happiness, Freedom and the Life Issues. Neither this book nor Fr. Spitzer have anything to do with Nazism.
Dr. William Donahue, president of the Catholic League, contacted the newspaper and was told that an apology would be printed in the next edition. Donahue insisted that this was insufficient since Moody's action had been deliberate and motivated by Fr. Spitzer's stand against Planned Parenthood.
Donahue insisted that the guilty party should be terminated. The next day Moody resigned at the request of the newspaper. The paper did run the apology, which Fr. Spitzer graciously accepted.
Commenting on the matter in Mt. Vernon, Washington's Skagit Valley Herald, (Nov. 19, 2000), editor Norm Lewis wrote, "The fact that no other editor caught the horror in the headline feeds deep-rooted concerns about the lack of ideological diversity or sensitivity in newsrooms across the land." This incident also shows just how far some Planned Parenthood supporters will go to attack those who stand up for life.
Election results: Composition of Congress and governors' offices
The following information comes from a NARAL e-mail of Nov. 13. STOPP simply replaced NARAL's "pro-choice" phrase with "pro-abortion" and NARAL's "anti-choice" phrase with "pro-life." However, NARAL's classification of someone as "anti-choice" does not necessarily mean that STOPP would thus classify the same person as "pro-life."
As a result of the elections, there were pro-abortion gains in the House and Senate, yet a "pro-life" majority remains. In gubernatorial races gains were made as well, but, a plurality of governors remains "pro-life."
SENATE: In the 106th Congress, there are 32 pro-abortion, 18 mixed, and 50 "pro-life" senators. When the new 107th Congress convenes, at this time there will be 34 pro-abortion, 18 mixed, and 47 "pro-life" senators. One senate race (Washington) currently remains too close to call-pro-life Senator Slade Gorton (R) vs. pro-abortion former Representative Maria Cantwell (D).
HOUSE: In the 106th Congress, there are 136 pro-abortion, 82 mixed, and 215 "pro-life" members. When the new 107th Congress convenes, at this time there will be 139 pro-abortion, 77 mixed, and 217 "pro-life" members. Two races currently remain too close to call: Florida-mixed Representative Clay Shaw (R) vs. pro-abortion state representative Elaine Bloom (D), and New Jersey-pro-abortion Representative Rush Holt (D) vs. mixed former representative Dick Zimmer (R).
Additionally, it should be noted that three other House races have been "called" by the Associated Press but remain close: Michigan (Rogers called over Byrum), Minnesota (Kennedy called over Minge), and New Mexico (Wilson called over Kelly). These likely results have been included in our preliminary tally. However, if any of these races resolve differently than today's indications, the overall tally will be affected accordingly.
GOVERNORS: Prior to the elections, the gubernatorial breakdown was 13 pro-abortion, 17 mixed and 20 "pro-life." The gubernatorial breakdown is now 15 pro-abortion, 14 mixed and 21 "pro-life."

STOPP supporters are urged to contact those PP donors listed above to voice your displeasure. If you are able, please consider matching one of the gifts above witha donation to STOPP.
Banquet to honor Fr. Marx
"Having traveled in more than 90 countries of the world and seen Planned Parenthood's vicious anti-life, anti-family, anti-God, evil propaganda and destruction, I know of no more wicked organization, no more insidious one, no more destructive one," wrote Fr. Paul Marx, OSB, in a Dec. 4 letter to STOPP.
Pro-lifers the world over know that Fr. Marx has been an outstanding defender of human life all over the globe-and Planned Parenthood's number one enemy. You have a special, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to recognize the decades of service Fr. Marx has given the pro-life movement by attending a special banquet and tribute to honor the life and times of Fr. Marx. It is part of "A Celebration of Life-World Family Conference," sponsored by American Life League and the Population Research Institute, to be held from June 20-24 in Bloomington, Minnesota.
This conference is for clergy, couples, students, families and pro-life leaders. Speakers include STOPP's own founder and president, Jim Sedlak, plus Judie Brown, Steven Mosher, Al Matt, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, Sr. Mary Pilar Verzosa, Fr. John Hardon, Prof. Charles Rice, Rev. Johnny Hunter, Dr. Claude Newberry, and many, many more.
STOPP urges all supporters to make plans now to attend this very special conference, which will thank Fr. Marx for the countless lives he has saved and changed. For more information call toll-free 888-546-2580 or e-mail Bernadette Ethen.
Charges dropped against Planned Parenthood protester
In the December issue of the Ryan Report we told you about some of the harassment heroic Planned Parenthood fighter Donna Benson endured from the police in Burlington, Iowa, earlier in the year. Well, in October they arrested, handcuffed and incarcerated Donna, but the story has a happy ending. Here's the article from the Burlington Hawk Eye (11/3/00) that tells what happened.
The charges against anti-abortion protester Donna Benson have been dropped because the city's attorney said the case would be too costly to prosecute. Benson, 65, Keokuk, was arrested Monday in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic at 620 N. Eighth St.
Benson had been conducting weekly demonstrations outside the clinic since Aug. 16. Her protests included signs with graphic photos of aborted fetuses, which drew complaints from neighbors, who said they were concerned about the photos being seen by children walking home from school.
Benson's arrest came about five weeks after she was warned by police to move signs she had set up in the city's right of way. City code prohibits signs from being set up that obstruct a motorist's visibility. Benson was released on recognizance, but not before she spent a night in the Des Moines County jail.
At the request of City Attorney Scott Power, Des Moines County Attorney Pat Jackson dismissed the charge against Benson Wednesday. Power, who said he hadn't seen the police report, said his decision to drop the charge was based on the cost of prosecuting the case. "We have a case here that contains some First Amendment questions, and we would spend a lot of money on a case that is a misdemeanor and it wouldn't be worth it," he said. "It's an expensive proposition and it wouldn't be worth it."
Because he had not seen the police report, Power did not comment on the merit of the charge. Police received an anonymous complaint Monday. When officers arrived, they found Benson had signs placed in the city right of way. Burlington Police Chief Dave Wunnenberg declined to comment on the case. Mayor Tim Scott also declined comment, saying he was advised by Power not to discuss the case. City Manager Bruce Slagle also declined comment.
The national director of STOPP International, the anti-abortion, anti-planned parenthood organization of which Benson is a member, has come to Benson's defense, calling for a change in the city's sign ordinance. "It is an affront to the American spirit and our rights to free speech," said Edward Szymkowiak.
He said the methods used by Benson are commonly used across the country and he suggested that if those methods, including leaning signs against cars and poles on public property increase the chances of a traffic hazard, then police should direct traffic, not infringe on a person's right to free speech. "Even if you disagree with the content of Mrs. Benson's message, you should be concerned about the way her constitutional rights have been trampled," Szymkowiak said.
Praise God! Donna sent STOPP the picture above, which shows her so-called "crime." In her letter to STOPP she emphasizes the fact that she relied upon the Lord to be her defense throughout the whole ordeal. Quoting Galatians 6:9, Donna reminds us all of the need for perseverance in our struggle against Planned Parenthood. "In due season we shall reap, if we faint not."
STOPP was happy to be able to help out by sending a letter to the local paper in support of her efforts. If any STOPP supporters find themselves in a similar situation because the local authorities violated constitutional guarantees of free speech, let us know, as we would be happy to send a letter to local papers and/or the district attorney in your defense.
STOPP commends the fearless and faithful example Donna has given us all. May God continue to bless and protect her as she heroically continues her battle against the evils of Planned Parenthood.
More free speech issues for PP protesters
The previous article gave one example of how local laws have been used to attempt to deprive pro-lifers of their constitutional right to protest Planned Parenthood. Here are two more recent examples.
The Fall 2000 issue of the Legal Center for Defense of Life's publication, Justice, told the story of how the town of Montclair, N.J., was forced to back down on its attempt to require a parade permit for a pro-life prayer vigil at a Planned Parenthood facility and a nearby abortion clinic on Aug. 12. When Lifenet told the local police about the upcoming vigil, the town responded by demanding that a parade permit be obtained.
Lifenet turned to the Legal Center for Defense of Life for help. The Legal Center contacted the police department and pointed out the constitutional problems with the local parade permit ordinance. The Legal Center also threatened to commence litigation in federal court. The town backed down and the vigil went on without any police interference.
On Nov. 16, the Milwaukee, Wis., Journal Sentinel reported that eight pro-life activists have filed a suit against the City of Elkhorn and its mayor regarding a city ordinance that requires a permit for public assembly and parades.
The suit stems from the application of the ordinance on Oct. 21 against members of Missionaries to the Preborn, who were demonstrating with signs and pictures of aborted babies during their monthly "Unmasking Planned Parenthood" tour. Forty-four protesters were ticketed and four of these, including Pastor Matthew Trewhella, were given $652 citations.
This ordinance is a classic example of prior restraint. It requires permit applications to be submitted 30 days in advance with a $500 permit fee. The police chief has the option of denying the permit if he or she thinks that the parade or assembly is reasonably likely to provoke disorderly conduct or to create a disturbance. Such an ordinance certainly has a chilling effect on free speech. Furthermore, Americans already have a permit for public assembly. It's called the Bill of Rights.
Let's pray that the situation in Elkhorn will resolve itself in favor of the pro-lifers, as did the ones involving Donna Benson and Lifenet. STOPP supporters facing similar situations might consider contacting the Legal Center for Defense of Life at 917-984-0725. The Legal Center also has a website.
Pro-life victory in Lancaster
On Dec. 1, Pennsylvania's State Commonwealth Court upheld a lower court ruling that abortion is prohibited, by city zoning law, at Planned Parenthood's Lime St. clinic in Lancaster, Pa.
The court's ruling was cheered as a great victory by members of Lancaster United for Life, which organized to oppose Planned Parenthood. It was Lancaster United for Life that got neighbors of the clinic to file the zoning appeal that led to the court's ruling.
"This is exhilarating news. It comes in answer to our prayers-the prayers of thousands," said Lancaster United for Life spokesman Jim Huber. "It shows that abortion-the killing of babies-is not an extension of existing services."
The court upheld Lancaster Judge Paul Allison's earlier decision that abortion is a surgical procedure and is thus banned in the city's residentially zoned area. Planned Parenthood of the Susquehanna Valley had argued that abortions were simply a natural extension of services already provided at the outpatient clinic. PP's attorney compared the abortion procedure to other procedures performed in a doctor's office such as a wisdom-tooth extraction or a plantar wart removal (Lancaster New Era, 12/4/00). Ridiculous!
The Commonwealth Court did not buy the lie and even noted that nothing in the record indicated that Planned Parenthood ever obtained permits to do procedures apparently performed at the clinic, such as Norplant insertions and endrometrial biopsies.
Huber has indicated that pro-lifers are considering future legal action on this matter as well.
What makes this case even more interesting for PP fighters (see next article) is that the Lancaster zoning hearing board and the city zoning officer had determined that abortions could be performed at the clinic. Had pro-lifers given up at this point, babies would now be dying at PP's Lime St. clinic. Instead they persisted in a two-year battle and organized the appeal of the zoning board's ruling in the courts.
STOPP has been active in the Lancaster fight. Jim Sedlak traveled to Lancaster several times to do radio and TV shows, to speak for two area pro-life organizations, Lancaster United for Life and Catholics Defending Human Life, and to discuss tactics with both groups.
This victory shows just how important prayer and persistence are in our fight against the evil of Planned Parenthood. STOPP commends all those faithful pro-lifers-and the politicians who supported them, particularly Congressman Joe Pitts-who won this marvelous victory for God's precious infants.
Another zoning battle: Manchester, New Hampshire
In late November, STOPP's national director, Ed Szymkowiak, was invited to Manchester, N.H., by New Hampshire Right to Life to help prepare local pro-lifers for their battle against a new Planned Parenthood clinic at 24 Pennacook St. in Manchester.
In typical PP style, a building permit for the clinic had been obtained by rather devious means. Last April, the landlord for the premises approached the city zoning board requesting a variance to remodel an existing structure to house a medical office for two or three general practitioners and staff in an area that was zoned residential. Since Planned Parenthood was not mentioned, the public hearing held last April drew no objections, and the zoning board issued the variance and later granted a building permit on Oct. 4.
On Oct. 12, the Manchester Union Leader announced that a new PP clinic would be located at the site and that the building permit included provisions for bullet-proof glass between the vestibule and exam rooms. A PP spokesperson said abortions would not be available at the site when it opened, but clearly defended it as a possible future addition to services offered.
New Hampshire Right to Life swung into immediate action. Its former president, Barbara Hagen, and state Rep. Kathy Souza challenged the building permit under the grounds that it was obtained under fraudulent circumstances. In response, the building commissioner suspended the permit on Nov. 6, pending the outcome of a zoning board meeting that was slated for Dec. 6.
STOPP's Ed Szymkowiak arrived in Manchester on Nov. 28. He was greeted by Betty Breuder and Linda Gould, who took Ed to Mass at St. Anselm College and then to lunch. Betty was one of the main subjects of a national PBS special, "Live Free or Die," which aired a few months earlier. This pro-abortion leaning documentary chronicled the removal of abortionist Dr. Wayne Goldner from teaching sex-education at the Bedford, N.H. public school. It was Betty's faithful leadership that led to this hard-won pro-life victory.
Ed spoke later that day for about two and a half hours to a group of about 70 pro-lifers in St. Catherine's church hall. Included in the group were two priests and three other pastors. Ed explained why and how we should oppose Planned Parenthood, with special emphasis on prayer, fasting and educational techniques including picketing. He gave tips for approaching a public body and urged those in attendance to bring as many people as they could to the zoning board meeting on Dec. 6.
The day before the meeting, Ed spoke about the matter on the popular Manchester talk radio show hosted by Woody Woodland. That same day, the Union Leader ran a story that focused on Manchester Bishop John B. McCormack's opposition to the PP clinic. Some weeks before, the bishop had sent a letter to pastors that suggested they urge their parishioners to write to the zoning board in opposition to the clinic. "This would be a tragedy for our city as well as to human life," said Bishop McCormack.
On Dec. 7, the Union Leader reported that police officers had to limit entry to the Dec. 6 zoning board meeting after about 200 people packed the aldermen's chambers to capacity! It had been billed as a public hearing, but no one got the chance to speak. Initially the pro-lifers were turned down by a 3-2 vote, but after a break, zoning board member Chester Raymond said he wanted to change his vote because the board had not allowed a lawyer to speak for the pro-lifers.
After some haggling, the zoning board decided to reschedule the hearing for Jan. 3, leaving city officials unsure of the status of the building permit. Joining pro-lifers at the Dec. 6 meeting was an attorney for a nearby accounting firm that had not contested the variance when they thought it was just for medical doctors, but are now concerned that their employees will be affected by a volatile issue. A nearby landlord said babies would be killed at the new clinic and feared that picketers would disturb her tenants.
STOPP has urged New Hampshire Right to Life to have Manchester residents call each zoning board member from now until the Jan. 3 meeting. Callers should be polite and not call late in the evening, but they should be firm in their commitment to oppose the clinic. If enough people contact these zoning board members, they will realize that this is an issue that will not go away. If Manchester pro-lifers can be as persistent as the Lancaster pro-lifers in the previous article, chances are good that their efforts will be successful. As the Lancaster example shows, even an unfavorable zoning board decision can be successfully appealed in court.
STOPP is happy to be a part of this battle. Thanks go to New Hampshire Right to Life, especially Betty Breuder, Linda Gould and Ed Holdgate, for all its hospitality.
