THE STOPP REPORT

Inventor gives credit to PP for ‘talking condom’

Someone at Planned Parenthood asked me if I could make a condom so unique it would get people talking about condom usage," Marc Snyder told Tweak (an internet "forum for the people building the media of the millennium"). "So I thought, hey, how about a talking condom?"

Snyder is the inventor and manufacturer of the Amazing Talking Condom, the latest safe sex promotion/kinky gimmick to hit the world adult toy market.

In actuality, it is the package in which the condom is wrapped that does the talking. "I used Thomas Edison's phonograph technology," said Snyder. "It's like the groove of an LP record, only straightened out. You slide your thumbnail down the recorded strip to make the condom talk." According to published reports, the talking strip produces phrases such as "hello sweetheart" and "let's make love."

We bring you news of this for two reasons. The first is the obvious Planned Parenthood connection. The second is the fact that you will probably be hearing more about this as it seems to be getting very popular. Snyder told Tweak that he is also looking into celebrity voices and custom-made condoms for specific industries.

Planned Parenthood wants to be taken seriously as a health care agency. But this kind of enterprise shows its true colors. It sees sex as a game, and our children are its pawns.

PP leader steps down-Proud of killing teens' babies

Planned Parenthood of Minnesota/South Dakota (PPMSD) announced recently that its president, Thomas P. Webber, had resigned after 29 years with the organization.

According to the announcement, Webber led Planned Parenthood through many legislative battles, and he spearheaded successful federal court lawsuits challenging restrictions on state expenditures of family planning funds and on the rights of minors to seek and receive abortion. According to Rebecca Palmer, chairman of the board of PPMSD, "Webber's leadership on this issue positively affected the rights of minors not just in Minnesota, but throughout the United States."

To give you an idea of what PPMSD does, here is the text of an actual ad run by it on a web site called Minneapolis/St. Paul City Pages: "Expert Abortion Services; 6 to 13-1/2 weeks; Many insurance plans accepted; Evening and Saturday appointments available; 3-4 hour clinic visit; 651-698-2406; Planned Parenthood of Minnesota/South Dakota."

Can you imagine that, after working for 29 years, one of your most memorable accomplishments is that underage girls can kill their children in the womb because of you?

Please pray for Webber and for all those that work at Planned Parenthood. Petition God to open their minds and hearts to be able to see the evil they are doing.

RU-486

Word has come that the FDA is ready to give final approval to the manufacture and sale of RU-486 possibly as early as September. PP is happy the drug will be approved, but livid about restrictions the FDA wants to impose.

Warning: New teen website

Attention parents—there is a new website that describes itself as the "first truly comprehensive health portal designed specifically for teens and young adults." According to press releases, Zaphealth.com will provide young people with access to relevant health-related information, while creating a new kind of online community dedicated to health and social issues.

As part of this effort, Zaphealth is generating charitable donations for three select non-profit organizations. One of those charities is Planned Parenthood of New York City. In addition to giving money to PP, the site continually references Planned Parenthood as a source.

The tone of the site is obvious from the headline on its home page: "When you can't ask mom . . ."

Parents are asked to watch out for children using this site. STOPP supporters should be vigilant with their school systems and block any effort to have this site available to children either in their classroom or in the school library.

PP pushing pills

Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood (RMPP, 2434 Arapahoe Ave, Boulder, CO) recently ran a classified advertisement in the Colorado Daily that stated: "Birth control pills available without an exam. Call Planned Parenthood, 303-447-1040."

It is incredible that a so-called responsible health care agency would push women to get pills without a physical exam. Although PP successfully lobbied the FDA in 1993 to allow distribution of the Pill without a physical exam, this outright promotion of a drug, which has numerous side effects, in such a manner is irresponsible.

PP Gets more funding in Minn.

On February 4, 2000, the city council of Minneapolis, Minnesota, met and unanimously approved a new agreement with Planned Parenthood of Minnesota and South Dakota. According to published reports, this agreement includes:

  • family planning services as part of the Maternal and Child Health Special Project for low income and at-risk women, in the amount of $30,000, for the period January 1 through December 31, 2001, payable from Neighborhood Services (030-860-8623)
  • clinic enhancement to include outreach to low-income families and assistance to families enrolling in Medicaid and MinnesotaCare, in the amount of $23,000, for the period January 1 through December 31, 2000, payable from Neighborhood Services (010-860-8623).

STOPP supporters in the Minneapolis area are encouraged to speak with the members of the city council and Mayor S. Sayles Belton to educate them on PP. You should begin to work now so these funds will not be approved again next year.

PP Amarillo programs

Planned Parenthood in Amarillo, Texas, has launched an aggressive program to have teens recruit their friends into PP programs. According to information released by PP, it will hold monthly "Dose of Reality" programs in Amarillo, Canyon, Borger, Clarendon, Childress, Hereford, Dalhart, Dumas, Pampa, Perryton, Shamrock and Tulia.

PP claims the programs provide teens with the education and resources they need to become "teens in the know." PP asserts that "Planned Parenthood staff provide the teens with a safe and confidential place, honest information, peer support and an opportunity to ask questions of sensitive health care professionals."

According to published reports, the program also will offer food and prizes.

These programs are designed, of course, to get unsuspecting teens to feel important and act as recruiting agents for PP. Pro-lifers in Amarillo will oppose these efforts by PP to corrupt our children.

PP and politics

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is a political action organization formed by PP to influence elections. The Asbury Park Press in New Jersey reported recently that PP, and many other organizations, are worried about the next presidential election. Of particular concern is the appointment of Supreme Court justices.

According to a story in the June 4 edition of the paper, "Planned Parenthood's political arm is distributing videos for house parties that begin with a fake newscast from 2001 about Bush nominating anti-abortion Republicans Alan Keyes and Phyllis Schlafly to the Supreme Court and designating Henry Hyde-one of the top House abortion opponents-as attorney general."

YWCA honors PP

The YWCA of Canton, Ohio, recently selected a Planned Parenthood employee for induction into its Women's Hall of Fame.

According to a story in The Massillion Independent (June 5), Bonnie Bolitho of Canton was honored because she "has served as director of Planned Parenthood of Stark County for the last 10 years." The story noted that Bolitho "advocates for the rights of women and families, particularly for those that are young or indigent."

We guess that, like Tom Webber, she is proud of advocating for the rights of young and indigent women to kill their babies.

Watch out Iowa, here comes another PP death house

In a story on June 3, the Burlington Hawk Eye reported that Planned Parenthood of Southeast Iowa will move its Burlington clinic and regional administrative offices out of downtown this summer and into the former Oncology Services building at 620 N. Eighth St.

Planned Parenthood currently occupies 2,500 square feet in the Tama Building. The Oncology Services building is 7,000 square feet.

According to published reports, Planned Parenthood says abortions will not be performed at the new location. "That has not even been discussed," said Cherry Klein, executive director of Planned Parenthood of Southeast Iowa.

Yeah, right!

We've been there before. Since 1985, STOPP has heard the same lie from Planned Parenthood. In community after community, PP secretly decides to do abortions, goes out and gets itself new office space. It gets all the zoning and building approvals, all the while adamantly stating it will not do abortions. Then, three years later, it suddenly discovers a "need" in the community for "abortion services" and "reluctantly" agrees to provide them.

Make no mistake about it, this is the first step for a new surgical abortion facility in Burlington, Iowa.

If anyone in Iowa has any doubts as to what will happen in Burlington, just talk to the pro-lifers in Bettendorf or Sioux City.

PP sets stage in Calif.

The North Coast Journal in Arcata, California, ran the following story on June 1:

Six Rivers Planned Parenthood is hosting a listening session on women's reproductive health. Organizers say they anticipate hearing about the need for increased accessibility and problems with transportation, especially in rural areas.

"It is hard for people to get into population centers for services," said Debbe Hartridge, director of information and education for Planned Parenthood.

If access is identified as a need, Planned Parenthood could send nurses into those areas to provide some services.

As we went to press, the session was scheduled to happen on June 6, from 1-3:30 p.m. in the Lakeview Room at the College of the Redwoods. It was co-hosted by the Women's Foundation, a San Francisco-based organization that secures funding for "organizations working toward improving women's place in society."

You can bet that Planned Parenthood has expansion plans in Arcata and this is the meeting that will "justify" its expansion.

Florida

Planned Parenthood of Collier County is soliciting teens to volunteer for Speak Up, Speak Out!-a new radio talk show for teens by teens that airs every Saturday morning on 98.9 WGUF from 11 to noon.

Warning to pro-lifers in Iowa and surrounding states

You are aware of the fight in Bettendorf over the last few years-how Planned Parenthood (lying about its intentions) came to town and then fought through the courts to get an abortion facility open. Word now comes that one of the chief proponents of Planned Parenthood in Bettendorf, the Rev. Charlotte Justice Saleska, is leaving the Quad Cities area and heading for "parts unknown."

Saleska spent 12 years as minister of the Unitarian Church in Davenport and is, according to published reports, leaving that post to spend time being "an interim pastor for other Unitarian churches." Those churches will be in transition, and she will reportedly help them explore problem areas and strengths. "The idea of doing that with a congregation is exciting to me," Saleska said. "It might be that a given church doesn't have much involvement and it might be that getting involved is the thing they need to focus in on for that transition year."

Saleska is credited by area PP supporters for being instrumental in their efforts on behalf of the PP abortion facility.

"She was one of the three that helped get the Progressive Clergy off the ground and helped all of us have a little more voice and a little more confidence and mutual support for one another," said the Rev. Keith Larson, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley, Iowa.

Rabbi Henry Karp told guests at a May 21 ceremony honoring Saleska, "I appreciate the voice of conscience she has always been."

Sometimes he had problems with the way abortion rights supporters advocated for a Planned Parenthood clinic in the Quad-Cities, one that eventually was built in Bettendorf and remains a source of great controversy. But Saleska, he said, convinced him to focus on the needs of women and not the politics of advocacy.

So Saleska is leaving the Quad Cities area and may show up in other cities in Iowa, in nearby states, or anywhere in America. It is important that STOPP supporters know of this woman and the harm she can do to your community. Be vigilant in any appointments to head your local Unitarian church and please pray for Saleska that God will open her eyes and move her to help children instead of killing them.

PP and ‘Teach Out 2000’

According to published newspaper accounts, Planned Parenthood was involved in supporting an outrageous program in Massachusetts called "Teach Out 2000."

The March 25th Massachusetts state government-affiliated event for educators and teens at Tufts University promoted, according to The New American, pederasty (intercourse between a man and a boy) and homosexual teenage sex, and presented graphic descriptions of homosexual sexual practices and at least one sadomasochistic practice.

According to Massachusetts News, attendees watched a videotape in which the seventh-grade girl narrator stated that the ancient Greeks "encouraged homosexuals; in fact, it was considered normal for an adolescent boy to have an older, wiser man as his lover." The workshop presenter, Christine L. Hoyle, then informed the assembled students and teachers that it was acceptable for an older man to approach adolescents for sex.

STOPP supporters, who have read the book It's Perfectly Normal that we have been telling you about for years, will remember that this Planned Parenthood-recommended book has a specific section praising the historic Greeks for their acceptance of homosexuality.

Condoms were also distributed freely to all students at the conference, some as young as 12 or 13 according to reports. The condoms were provided courtesy of Planned Parenthood and a local birth control clinic.

Over the years we have brought you many stories of the outrageous programs supported by Planned Parenthood. Although it was not the main sponsor of this particular event, it was still very much involved and did, as it does at rock concerts all over America, indiscriminately distribute condoms to minors. In days gone by, PP would have been hauled into court for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. In today's world, however, it is rewarded with bigger and bigger government contracts.

As you might expect, this conference caused a great deal of outrage and political investigation. There were major attempts to cover up what had actually been said at the conference. Eventually, two employees of the Massachusetts state education department who had been active presenters at the conference were fired.

We are not aware of any statement issued by PP apologizing for its involvement.

PP abortions in Calif.

The following is the complete text of a press release from Planned Parenthood in California:

SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 1-AB 2393, sponsored by Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg, was signed into law Wednesday, May 31 by Governor Gray Davis. Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California applauds Governor Davis for signing AB 2393 permitting community clinics to enter into managed care contracts with HMOs thereby allowing Planned Parenthood to contract with private insurers to provide comprehensive reproductive health care services including abortions.

"With a declining number of physicians offering abortions, the presence of Planned Parenthood as a provider within managed care networks is a positive step," said Kathy Kneer, CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. "The new law makes it possible for insured women in California to have access to high quality abortion services as part of their obstetrical and gynecological services."

Kneer emphasized another significance of the Assembly bill. "Planned Parenthood applauds Governor Davis' commitment to protecting a woman's right to reproductive health care services-having a pro-choice governor counts!"

Thus, Planned Parenthood is now able to kill the babies of poor women using state money in California. Somehow, we do not think true child advocates will celebrate at this announcement.

PP Texas merger

The following are excerpts from an April 6 press release from Planned Parenthood:

DALLAS-The boards of directors of Planned Parenthood of Dallas and Northeast Texas and Planned Parenthood of North Texas, the Fort Worth affiliate, announced today the merger of the two organizations into a new agency. The new affiliate will be called Planned Parenthood of North Texas (PPNT), which best describes the territory it will serve. [STOPP calculates that the new affiliate will rank 11th out of the 130 affiliate members of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, with a total income of just under $12 million.]

The newly merged affiliate will maintain local presence in both Dallas and Fort Worth. Since the Dallas affiliate has recently conducted a successful $5.1 million capital campaign to buy and refurbish its headquarters, the new PPNT headquarters will be in Dallas. An educational and volunteer center will be housed in Fort Worth.

James T. Roderick, formerly the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Dallas and Northeast Texas, has assumed the leadership position of the merged entity. Mr. Roderick came to Dallas in 1982 to start a new affiliate when the former affiliate left the Planned Parenthood network and changed its name to offer cradle-to-grave healthcare for both male and female clients.

"We are committed to achieving our mission of serving all North Texans who want and need reproductive healthcare in our twenty-seven clinics located throughout North Texas," Mr. Roderick said. "With this merger, no clinics are being closed. We are looking forward to expanding community education opportunities and enhancing our ability to better impact public policy, assuring accessible, affordable healthcare for women and their families."

[STOPP: As is normal for PP mergers, this one was driven by cost considerations.] PPNT has a remarkable opportunity to reduce overhead through consolidated purchases and economies of scale. Most importantly, the merger facilitates the expansion of both medical services and educational opportunities.

Mr. Roderick said, " A stronger, more efficient Planned Parenthood will be an effective agent for change in North Texas."

South Dakota

A pro-abortion leader in South Dakota recently paid an unintended compliment to those who oppose Planned Parenthood in the state. In an article in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, which was discussing how the issue of abortion has become toned down in the state, Thelma Underberg, executive director of the South Dakota National Abortion Rights Action League, says actions against pro-choice candidates might have been toned down by organizations, but individuals acting alone still create a stir.

"They still held signs calling President Clinton a baby-killer when he came here," Underberg said. "And if you go to the (Planned Parenthood) clinic and see the protesters out there, there are people out there with baby-killer signs."

Congratulations to the faithful pro-lifers in Sioux Falls who still tell the truth about Clinton and Planned Parenthood. We will all stop calling them baby killers when they stop killing babies.

Wyoming

In a June 5 article in the Cheyenne Wyoming Tribune-Eagle, Adrienne Verrilli, senior press officer with the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, blamed pro-lifers for the limited number of birth control options available.

"There are few manufacturers of contraceptives because sadly they've been targeted by religious and anti-contraception groups," she said.

Since all the new forms of so-called contraceptives really kill babies in the womb, there is a good reason why every pro-lifer should oppose their manufacture.

PP loses another Pa. effort

Planned Parenthood has been trying to open an abortion facility in Warminster (Bucks County), Pennsylvania. This is in addition to the one it is having trouble opening in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

When PP originally applied to the town for a permit, there was an issue of whether its new clinic on Louis Drive complied with a section of the zoning code that applies to medical and dental establishments offering outpatient services such as oral and laser eye surgery in an industrial district. Township zoning officer Thomas Thern said clinics offering abortions operate under the same zoning classification as outpatient medical facilities. Then the zoning hearing board, in a 3-2 decision, agreed with Thern's judgment and upheld his ruling.

Pro-lifers-4,400 of them Warminster residents whose names appear on a petition-are battling the zoning board's ruling in county court, as they argue that abortions are surgical procedures requiring specialized care and are not allowed where Planned Parenthood does business.

The new development is that the board of supervisors has now voted to ask the court to return the case to Warminster. This vote was prompted, in part, by Supervisor William Goldsworthy who told local newspapers that medical journals, numerous letters to his office and copies of the Abortion Control Act suggest that abortions are surgical procedures that cannot be compared to eye or oral surgeries.

Goldsworthy said he's not convinced that the three zoning board members who sided with Thern's decision had enough information to do so. Goldsworthy cited the opinion of minority zoning members Arnold Cleff and Jane Lynch. They had argued the zoning code was written before abortions were declared legal in the United States.

The lawyer for area pro-lifers, James T. Owens, thanked supervisors for taking such action. He had urged them to intervene.

"Don't let us go up there (to court) alone," he said. "Share in the victory when we win."

Planned Parenthood's lawyer, Marc Jonas, is fighting the opponents' right to appeal the zoning board's decision, and arguing the residents filed their appeal past the 30-day deadline from the date of the clinic's application for an occupancy permit. He also said they live too far from the clinic to be hurt by its operations.

Supervisors have filed a motion supporting the opponents' right to be heard. The supervisors said opponents did not learn of the clinic's intention to perform abortions until a December newspaper article revealed the clinic's plans. When Planned Parenthood applied for a permit to move into a building at 610 Louis Drive, the organization did not disclose that it would be performing abortions.

This is just the kind of deception for which PP is famous. First it lies, then it tries to claim immunity because its lies weren't found out in time.

Bettendorf

Pro-lifers in Bettendorf, Iowa, have been fighting a PP abortion mill for many years. The latest effort was announced recently. Here are excerpts from a newspaper story covering that announcement from the Quad City Times on June 3:

The abortion debate took an economic turn Friday as members of the anti-abortion Life & Family Coalition announced the start of a $1.1 million capital campaign to finance a headquarters building across the street from Planned Parenthood in Bettendorf.

Life & Family Coalition vice president Kathryn Bohn will coordinate what supporters hope will be a six-month campaign for the two-story education center and office facility to be built on property the group purchased last year. A year-long construction effort would follow fundraising completion.

PP school ad challenged

A member of the Pekin, Ill., school board has challenged an advertisement placed in the high school newspaper by Planned Parenthood.

Mark Rossi believes an ad in the student newspaper may be tacitly implying that district officials believe it's okay for students to have illegal underage sex. He said the ad from a local office of Planned Parenthood may violate the district's publications policy that prohibits the publication of material inappropriate for students because of their age. It is illegal for students under the age of 18 to have sex, Rossi said. The ad may violate policy because it mentions birth control as a service offered. The words "you can get" in the ad and a list of services means "come and get it," Rossi said.

Joyce Harant, president of Planned Parenthood Heart of Illinois, defended the ad saying, "There is nothing in the ad to encourage sexual activity. It simply shows what's available to teens if they decide to be sexually active,"

The issue has been tentatively placed on the agenda for a committee of the whole meeting in September.

FDA and RU-486

For years, the pro-abortion people have been touting the safety and effectiveness of mifepristone (RU-486). It is the drug taken up to seven weeks after implantation to kill a baby in the womb. After an extensive review, the FDA is ready to approve the drug, but with some major restrictions.

STOPP researcher Tina Whittington has looked at those restrictions and offers some salient comments:

FDA's requirements for prescribing RU-486 include:

  1. A national registry of all abortion doctors prescribing RU-486.

Tina: "A national registry is not required with the majority of drugs approved by the FDA. If this drug did not have dangerous side effects or potential for complications, this kind of registry would not be required."

  2. Prescribers must have admitting privileges at a hospital within one hour of their office.

Tina: "This is required because of the need for hospitalization for those women who experience excessive bleeding, or severe hemorrhaging requiring a blood transfusion or administration of intravenous fluid, after having taken the abortion-causing chemical. Hospitalization can also occur because of abdominal pain or severe vomiting."

  3. Doctors must do a follow up study of all patients who are prescribed RU-486.

Tina: "This is because women can experience bleeding for 30 to 60 days after taking RU-486 and can even develop endometritis in relation to taking the drug."

  4. Doctors must be trained in providing surgical abortions.

Tina: "Training for surgical abortion is required because of the eight percent failure rate of RU-486 in killing babies aged 49 days or less (the failure rate is 23 percent if the baby is between 55 and 63 days old). Women would obtain surgical abortion because of incomplete RU-486 abortion, with the side-effects of extreme abdominal pain or vomiting they are experiencing." The next time someone tries to tell you about how safe RU-486 is, cite the FDA restrictions and the complications summarized above. As Tina noted in her summary on this terrible drug, "Not only is RU-486 not safe for women but, with or without restrictions, taking the pill always results in the delivery of a dead baby."

This month's action items

  • Continue to let people know about Planned Parenthood's involvement in abortion. It always amazes us how many people do not know that PP kills babies.
  • Educate people on the side effects of RU-486 (mifepristone) and ask your elected officials to block its approval by the FDA.
  • Monitor your child's internet sessions and keep them away from sites that spread the Planned Parenthood philosophy.
  • Work in your area to stop PP teen programs and, especially, any program that involves PP peer educators. They are nothing but recruiting grounds for PP.
  • Follow the example of the school board in Illinois and challenge any PP ads in high school newspapers.
  • Invite a STOPP speaker to your events in your community. We can educate people on PP and inspire tired pro-lifers to action and activity. We still have a few dates available in 2000 and are now accepting engagements for 2001. To schedule a talk, call 540-659-4171; ask for Rozann.
  • Send a tax-deductible donation today to help us keep fighting Planned Parenthood.
  • Pray that God will lead us in our work, and that we will always have the courage to do His will.
