PP STATEMENTS

A woman's rights should supersede the rights of the Catholic Church.

Pam Sutherland, president and CEO of the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council, as quoted in the Spring 2000 edition of Speak Out! (a PPFA publication), commenting on a proposal that would require Catholic hospitals to provide abortifacient "emergency contraception" to rape victims.

Such self-righteous arrogance is unfortunate in a pluralistic society that does not have a (national) religion. We cannot let one religion dictate the policies of a community. I think it is unfortunate the Vatican has reached its long arms to Seattle to try and impose its will on the United Way.

Faye Wattleton, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, as quoted in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 10/22/88. Her comments were made after Planned Parenthood was denied membership in United Way of Seattle.

Some religious and semi-religious groups dominated by elderly men, simply cannot deal rationally with sex. They can't talk about it rationally, can't think about it rationally, and above all can't give up the power w;hich controlling other people gives them. They control other people through sex. What groups? The Roman Catholic Church...the Ku Klux Klan, and certain fundamentalist churches... All of these groups control people through controlling their sexual activity. All of these groups are totalitarian groups which offer women no freedom of choice in sexual matters.
