The eyes of the world will focus on the meeting of Pope Benedict XVI and President Barack Obama July 10. Despite Vatican press to the contrary, the pope will meet the most pro-abortion president in the history of the United States.
On May 20, 2009, Gian Maria Vian, editor-in-chief of the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, said to a Vatican analyst for the daily publication Il Riformista, “Obama has not upset the world. …Obama is not a pro-abortion president.”
Vian continued, “Let me be clear, L’Osservatore stands where the American bishops are: we consider abortion a disaster. We must promote, always and at every level a ‘culture of life.’”
These statements directly contradict each other. President Obama has appointed the country’s most radically pro-abortion politicians to key positions of power and influence throughout his new administration. He has stripped the preborn of the pitifully few protections they enjoyed both in the United States and abroad. He has used tax money to fund the abortion industry—a business the Catholic Church rightfully calls “intrinsically evil.” These are facts, and they are as clear as Obama's vote in the Illinois Senate to allow infanticide to continue.
We, the undersigned, present to Pope Benedict XVI on the eve of President Barack Obama’s arrival at the Vatican, a record of the president’s unequivocal support for abortion, which is fueling our current culture of death. We hope this information and our testimony will alert Pope Benedict to the grave assault currently underway in the United States on the dignity of the human person.
Despite information to the contrary from the Vatican’s L’Osservatore Romano, we ardently affirm that President Obama is indeed the most pro-abortion president in the history of the United States.
We eagerly await the Holy Father’s pastoral guidance to advance a culture of life in an atmosphere of cruel dehumanization and selfish disregard for human beings’ right to life.
