American Life League calls on Bishop Bootkoski to clarify Church teaching and teacher’s status

Washington, DC—American Life League vice president, Jim Sedlak, issued the following statement in regard to a New Jersey Catholic schoolteacher who was placed on leave and the bishop’s defense of that action:

In his statement supporting the removal of a Catholic teacher from a Catholic classroom because of remarks she made about homosexuals on her Facebook page, Bishop Bootkoski failed to accurately communicate two major items.

He stated that he found that the “teacher’s comments were disturbing and do not reflect the Church’s teachings of acceptance. . . . Pope Francis reminds us that we are to accept all of our brethren.” While these statements do reflect the Church’s teaching of acceptance as contained in Paragraph 2358 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the bishop chose to omit the clear mandate of CCC paragraph 2359: “Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.”

It is disingenuous of the bishop to publicly cite the Church’s call for acceptance of the sinful individual without, at the same time, reminding the sinner of the Church’s expectation in his or her life. Such an omission will, and has, caused confusion on the true Catholic teaching regarding the homosexual lifestyle.

The bishop also made a specific point that the teacher “has never been terminated. . . . She has been put on administrative leave. There has been no interruption in her pay and benefits.” Yet, it appears the teacher has been informed that her contract will not be renewed for the 2015-2016 school year.

Whatever the bishop thinks of the language used by this teacher in her Facebook post, there is no evidence that she said anything contrary to Catholic teaching, and it would appear to be the Catholic thing to do to accept this teacher back into the school next year.

American Life League calls on Bishop Bootkoski to proclaim the full truth of Church teaching so that Catholics, and all others, will be rightly exposed to the full beauty of the gospel.

American Life League Responds to Attack
      onCatholic Education and Religious Freedom

Statement from ALL president Judie Brown in support
      of Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone

Washington, DC—San Francisco archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has come under increasing pressure after clarifying Catholic school policies in his archdiocese in order to safeguard Catholic identity. Reports surfaced showing that a high-priced public relations firm headed by Sam Singer has been employed to attack the archbishop and dissuade him from enacting the clarifications.

Judie Brown, president of American Life League, issued a statement in defense of Archbishop Cordileone:

Odd how it works! When an archbishop steps forward in “the land of the free and the home of the brave” and reiterates his defense of Catholic teaching, the devil cannot stand it. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has every right to demand that children in his Catholic schools be taught the tenets of the Catholic faith by teachers who not only teach it, but live it. How quick the opposition is to attack him and deny him the religious freedom that permits him to act out of justice and love for the truth.

Further investigation into the enemies of Archbishop Cordileone and his defense of truth will reveal the sordid underbelly of an ugly effort in this nation to stifle moral truth, deny that God exists, and eradicate freedom to learn about Christ in the public square, not to mention in Catholic schools owned and operated by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. We applaud Archbishop Cordileone and we stand with him in this, his finest hour. We condemn those who attack the truth, be it from the LGBT community, the abortion rights community, or anywhere else where evil lurks.

American Life League’s vice president, Jim Sedlak, stated, “In an effort to spin the responsible actions of this heroic bishop in order to garner opposition to him, his opponents have hired a PR expert to spin the truth to their advantage. We will be mobilizing our constituents to storm heaven with prayer and to let the archbishop know he is not alone.”

      American Life League Remembers

      Professor Charles Rice

Statement by Judie Brown, president of American Life League

Washington, DC—Judie Brown, president of American Life League, reacted to the death of pro-life hero Professor Charles Rice with the following statement:

I was sincerely saddened and moved to tears upon hearing of the passing of my dear friend, Professor Charles Rice. From the first days of American Life League’s founding in 1979, Professor Rice was there at our side, guiding our principles, explaining the natural law, and exposing the ways manmade laws stood in the way of saving all the babies. He never disappointed us or ignored our nearly constant pleas for help and advice. He was the driving force behind the early language of what we call the personhood imperative. He and Nellie Gray led the way with style and intellectual honesty from the start.

Of all the books Dr. Rice wrote, we were especially grateful for No Exception: A Pro-Life Imperative. This book was so succinct and clear in the natural law principles Rice enunciated that it was impossible not to understand the no exceptions position once the book was digested. From 1990, when it was first published, it was required reading for every newly hired American Life League staff member. To this day there is no other book like it, but then again, there is no other man of the integrity and tough-mindedness that was Dr. Rice's hallmark.

I recall the many late-night calls I made to him when, stymied by an argument someone had thrown my way or a discussion point I felt needed more clarification, there was nobody else to ask. He always called me “kid,” and from the first days of our budding friendship I always called him Charlie.

Professor Rice was a solid Catholic, a remarkable educator, a legal mind like no other, and of course a Marine. His mental toughness made him a great champion for the babies, for the family, and for the truth. His defense of Humanae Vitae, among other Catholic documents, was awe-inspiring. His lectures to our staff were more than memorable. His sense of humor was uniquely Irish—probably because he was Irish to his core.

Professor Charles E. Rice will be sorely missed. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.

ALL President Judie Brown Fondly Remembers Cincinnati Right to Life Founder Dr. Jack Willke

Jack Willke, MD – physician, leader, friend

Washington, DC—American Life League president Judie Brown issued the following statement after learning of the death of close friend and founder of Cincinnati Right to Life, Dr. Jack Willke:

I have known Dr. Willke since my days as an Ohio Right to Life chapter member from Steubenville, Ohio (1975). During those days he became interested in my writing for the chapter newsletter, and the rest is history. When my husband was transferred, he arranged for me to volunteer my time at the NRLC offices in Washington, DC, which I did from 1976 to 1979. He then even recommended to Dr. Mildred F. Jefferson—my boss and president of NRLC at the time—that a salary for me was a good idea. What started out as a few hours a week turned into a full-time job!

Dr. Willke was the consummate educator, the expert witness at hearings, the inspirational speaker at national events, and most of all, a mentor to anyone who crossed his path and needed guidance.

While he will be sorely missed, his legacy and the fine work of his right-hand man, Brad Mattes, guarantees that he will live on in ways we cannot now imagine. We will all miss you, Jack. You are in our hearts and prayers.

      Judie Brown, President

      American Life League, Inc.

Review Finds Plan B has ‘Significant Potential’ of Causing an Abortion

ALL Urgently Requests that Catholic Bishops Halt Dispensing of Emergency Contraception

Washington, DC—American Life League is calling on Catholic bishops who allow their Catholic hospitals to dispense Plan B to reconsider in light of new evidence.

A major scientific review by Christopher Kahlenborn, MD, et al, published this week in the Linacre Quarterly, found that levonorgestrel emergency contraception, also known as Plan B, has “significant potential of working via abortion.” The review also revealed that arguments claiming Plan B is not an abortifacient are not scientifically defensible.

      The review states:

Physicians who dispense LNG-EC [Plan B] to rape victims in the preovulatory period . . . are giving LNG-EC at a time in a woman’s menstrual cycle when it has significant potential to work via the death of the embryo. Physicians who dispense LNG-EC in the postovulatory period may be increasing a woman’s risk of becoming clinically pregnant.

“Catholic bishops have been assured, by Plan B proponents, that the drug does not cause an abortion,” stated Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “We now know this is not true. There is a grave risk that preborn human lives are being killed by Plan B, and Catholic hospitals need to immediately halt dispensing these drugs and review their policies.”

The authors of the review concluded that “Catholic hospitals that allow the dispensing of LNG-EC [Plan B] prior to ovulation—especially when given within 48 hours of ovulation—are permitting the use of a drug which has a significant potential of working via abortion. . . . If given prior to ovulation, LNG-EC should be labeled as emergency abortion/contraception.

Disney Measles Outbreak Connected to Abortion, Unethical Vaccines

American Life League Joins Push for Merck to Revive Ethical Single-Dose Vaccines

Washington, DC—American Life League joined the call urging Merck to make available the single-dose versions of its measles and mumps vaccines. Currently, the measles vaccine from Merck is only available combined with mumps and rubella. The rubella portion of the combination vaccine was created from aborted fetal cell lines.

“Merck is denying parents the choice of obtaining an ethical measles vaccine,” stated Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “According to Children of God for Life, outbreaks of measles, such as at the California Disney parks, have been on the increase ever since Merck discontinued the ethical single-dose vaccine in 2008.”

Debi Vinnedge, president of Children of God for Life, explained that there are a large number of parents who do not vaccinate their children for measles due to there being no ethical version of the vaccine available. “Ninety-nine percent of the parents I encounter just want the moral versions of measles and mumps vaccines,” Vinnedge stated. “If Merck were to make the ethical single-dose vaccines available again, vaccine coverage would increase significantly.”

Both American Life League and Children of God for Life are urging their supporters to sign a change.org petition requesting Merck revive the single-dose versions of its vaccines.

Planned Parenthood Continues Downward Spiral: 34 Facilities CLOSED in 2014

STOPP releases 2014 report on Planned Parenthood facilities in the United States

Washington, DC—American Life League’s STOPP International has released the latest report on Planned Parenthood facilities in the United States. STOPP cofounder and ALL vice president, Jim Sedlak, commented, “Once again, our annual survey of Planned Parenthood shows an organization in decline. The organization continues its downward spiral, with the number of centers well below its 1973 level.”

ALL president Judie Brown stated, “Every day a Planned Parenthood closes is a good day for our nation. We still have a long way to go. We will not stop until every Planned Parenthood facility is closed.”

The highlights of the report include:

      • During 2014, Planned Parenthood Federation of America continued to close “health centers” at a record rate. This year, it closed 34 centers in a total of 19 different states.
      • Planned Parenthood now operates 668 centers in the United States, of which 337 commit surgical and/or medical abortions.
      • Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion chain, operating 45.6 percent of all the surgical/medical abortion facilities.
      • This year is the first time in 10 years that Planned Parenthood had fewer surgical abortion centers AND fewer medical abortion centers AND fewer total number of surgical/medical abortion centers.
      • There are two Planned Parenthood affiliates that do not do surgical or medical abortions at any of their centers:
        • Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma
        • Planned Parenthood of West and Northern Michigan
      • North Dakota continues to be the only state where Planned Parenthood has no centers that provide medical services.
      • With the closing of its Rapid City, South Dakota, center in 2014, Planned Parenthood now has five states in which it operates only one center.

A full copy of the latest STOPP report can be found at http://www.stopp.org/pdfs/2014/STOPP_Facilities2014.pdf.

STOPP: Planned Parenthood Annual Report Shows It's About Money, Not Women

Washington, DC—Planned Parenthood Federation of America has released its 2013-2014 Annual Report and the numbers show a stagnant business making tons of money from unsuspecting donors.

Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League and founder of its STOPP International program, released the following comments concerning the new Planned Parenthood report:

This report demonstrates that Planned Parenthood has hit a roadblock in its efforts to entice the American public to use its so-called health services. When analyzing the newly released PP numbers, we find that:

      • Planned Parenthood’s contraceptive business DECLINED from 3,724.558 customers in 2012 to 3,577,348 customers in 2013.
      • Planned Parenthood’s abortion business remained basically flat, with 327,166 abortions committed in 2012 and 327,653 abortions committed in 2013.
      • Planned Parenthood’s income from non-government-related health services remained flat at $305.4 million last year and $305.3 million this year.

Despite this lack of increase in its primary business, Planned Parenthood continued to receive over a half-billion dollars in taxpayer money ($540 million last year vs. $528 million this year), but has such a tremendous publicity machine that it convinced corporate and private donors to increase donations by more than $75 million (from $315.4 million to $391.8 million).

The increased donations, plus an increase of $28 million in “other operating revenue” and the reduction in costs from closing clinics, led to a near-record $127.1 million in PROFITS for the largest abortion chain in the nation. This was the second highest reported annual profit in Planned Parenthood’s history.

The new Planned Parenthood Annual Report shows one thing – Planned Parenthood is all about money, not health care.
