Many pro-lifers do not view contraception as a pro-life concern — but it is. As you will learn in the in the pages linked to your left, some forms of birth control can actually cause an early abortion. Additionally, birth control leads to a state of mind that treats sexual activity as if it has nothing to do with procreation. Sexual activity becomes a recreational activity, birth control becomes a recreational drug and babies become "accidents" or burdens to be eliminated.
In addition to the moral reasons, there are two very important health reasons for our opposition to chemical birth control. The first is that, contrary to popular thought, birth control does not reduce abortion — even those who support birth control admit to this. It is extremely dishonest to promote the theory that the birth control curtails abortion per se when, in fact, chemical birth control can and does work in three different ways, one of which is abortion. Therefore, to suggest that birth control "keeps abortions from happening" is not accurate.
Further, the synthetic hormones in many forms of chemical birth control are known to be carcinogenic (cancer causing)[1] and can cause a series of health problems for both women and for future preborn children. Chemical birth control has been linked not only to cancer, but heart conditions, thromboembolisms (deep vein blood clots) and more.[2]
Chemical birth control has also recently been tied to negative effects on the environment, particularly rivers and streams, as well as wildlife in those waterways.[3]
It is not compassionate to deceive men or women by only telling them what they want to hear. There are cruel facts about birth control that rarely see the light of day. It is part of our responsibility to make sure such facts are part of the education we provide so that, regardless of what your opinion is, you have all the facts before making a decision one way or the other.
