Ovulation induction exacerbates gingivitis
A recent study published in the Journal of Periodontology sought to examine the effects of fertility drugs on the gingival tissues of women who were undergoing infertility treatment and has concluded that ovulation induction, which is the most common method in the management of infertility, exacerbates gingival inflammation, bleeding and GCF volume.
Researchers assessed the effects of clomiphene citrate (CC) alone, CC combined with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and CC combined with human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) on women who used them for three menstrual cycles or less and on women using them for more than three cycles.
Results of the study show that not only does ovulation induction exacerbate gingival inflammation and related complications, but that the duration of the usage of these drugs is also strongly associated with the severity of the inflammation.
