California’s attorney general Xavier Becerra has charged Center for Medical Progress leader David Daleiden and his coinvestigator Sandra Merritt with 15 felonies. In addition, Becerra has issued a warrant for Daleiden’s arrest.
However, just hours after the charges were filed, Daleiden released “another damning undercover video” revealing more commentary from Planned Parenthood officials who are setting up deals with others for the delivery of baby body parts.
But the California AG is not swayed by these facts. In a statement, Becerra said: “The right to privacy is a cornerstone of California’s Constitution, and a right that is foundational in a free democratic society. . . . We will not tolerate the criminal recording of confidential conversations.” In other words, the AG is alleging that CMP’s video reporting is somehow considered “criminal.”
No wonder Planned Parenthood has worked so hard to silence Daleiden and his supporters. In an interview given shortly after the charges were filed, Daleiden criticized the criminal complaint saying: "The bogus charges from Planned Parenthood's political cronies are fake news. . . . The public knows the real criminals are Planned Parenthood and their business partners."
Indeed it seems that exposing the business of aborting babies and delivering their tissues to others for research is information that Planned Parenthood will do anything to remove from the public square—even if it means putting the reporters themselves behind bars. As outrageous as this sounds, it is all too real for David and Sandra.
Columnist Mona Charan has given us something else to think about. She writes that Becerra had no trouble using a secretly taped video of Mitt Romney making a somewhat questionable remark during a private fundraiser in California a few years ago, but apparently has big problems when the target is Planned Parenthood rather than a Republican presidential hopeful. She suggests that perhaps the Democrats themselves have axes to grind with the CMP videos.
Lest we forget, Becerra succeeded Kamala Harris in the job of California attorney general. And Harris, now a US senator, had nothing good to say about the CMP work that exposed Planned Parenthood’s barbaric shenanigans. In fact, there was evidence that Harris “teamed up with the Planned Parenthood abortion business to target David Daleiden.”
The plot thickens, the politically powerful continue throwing punches, and the heroes take it on the chin.
But we must remember that Daleiden is a warrior and that nobody can cow him into silence—at least not if we, he, or his crack legal team can help it.
In a press release, Life Legal Defense Fund—the group defending Daleiden in a couple of other charges—made this statement in his defense: “This is nothing short of a witch hunt. . . . David Daleiden's investigative journalism provided an indispensable public service by shedding light on Planned Parenthood's criminal activities and its callous disregard for human life.”
Tom Brejcha, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Society, Daleiden’s legal defense team member, expanded on this, saying: “The world knows that Planned Parenthood’s business partners, DaVinci Biosciences and DV Biologics, have been sued by Orange County, California. The lawsuit alleges that they illegally profited from the sale of human baby body parts from abortions. This confirms the truth of what has been depicted in Daleiden’s videos.”
Indeed, Daleiden will be found innocent of all these trumped up charges sooner or later, and to that we say “Amen!”
So let’s do all we can to remain in solidarity with David and his collaborators. Daleiden is standing tall in the face of his persecutors and continuing to do all he can to unmask Planned Parenthood’s deception. For this we praise God!
