ACLU, Planned Parenthood Fight Equality, Human Rights in Alaska, Missouri and Nevada

Washington, D.C. (03 December 2009) – The American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood are on the forefront of a movement to block human rights campaigns in Alaska, Missouri and Nevada.

The groups have been instrumental in lawsuits against personhood measures in the three states saying “such ‘personhood’ amendments have been introduced in other states and the apparent intent of the sponsors is to undercut a women’s constitutional right of choice” (ACLU of Nevada).

The ACLU of Alaska alleges the personhood amendment language does not adequately present voters with the possible consequences of its enactment, such as the outlawing of abortion.

But the ACLU has it wrong. All three personhood measures simply recognize that all human beings are persons under the law.

“Is the ACLU blind to the irony of the nation’s ‘guardian of liberty,’ as the ACLU likes to call itself, opposing something as fundamental as human rights for all human beings?” asked Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “If it weren’t so tragic it would be laughable. In the hierarchy of rights and values, the ACLU is willing to literally fight to the death to keep a woman’s ability to kill her child – currently sanctioned by an unjust law – as they simultaneously vehemently oppose a basic human right – the right to life – it’s breathtaking.”

Personhood sponsors in the three states are fighting back.

“It’s about whether or not we as a society are going to recognize the unborn as legal persons and call it for what it is,” said Alaska personhood initiative sponsor Christopher Kurka.

Likewise, Richard Ziser, board member and campaign manager of Personhood Nevada had this to say about the ACLU’s claim that personhood violates civil liberties:

“While the state has no authority to grant inalienable rights, it has the obligation to protect them.  With an ever more oppressive federal government lacking leadership in protecting the weakest and most vulnerable in our midst, the people of Nevada are taking necessary action to correct this injustice. This amendment addresses the most important civil right, the right to live, without which all other civil rights are rendered irrelevant.”

Judie Brown agreed.

“It’s crystal clear the ACLU has no respect for human persons, including voters and the democratic process, let alone true human rights and civil liberties.”

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death.  For more information or press inquiries, please contact Katie Walker at 540.659.4942.
